Manual steering mod thread

All:
I've been unsuccessful in contacting the person who started this thread, and the links to all the helpful pics are dead. Did anyone by chance save the pics for themselves, and/or know the guy wjo started it?

Thanks!

Did you see one of my posts saying that the ratio of the FC manual rack was not ideal? The FD rack, if converted to full manual operation, is a better solution. I've posted information on the Maval Gear conversion in other threads, BTW.

Jim,
I saw that it was a different ratio, but honestly am too naive about such things to know the difference. Would a converted FD rack be quicker/lighter than the FC? Info welcome.

Quicker, but I don't know about lighter. Probably about the same, although if there's a difference, it's probably not worth worrying about.

1986-87 FC manual rack
Ratio: 20.3:1
Turns: 3.5 lock to lock (left to right)

1993-95 FD converted manual rack
Ratio: 15.0:1
Turns: 2.9 lock to lock

The FD rack would definitely be quicker to respond to steering wheel input.

wish they werent so clandestine about their schedule..
ive sent them my rack a few months ago and been gettin the runaround on the time frame..
last call placed with them generated confusion as to which rack on their bench was mine..

FYI, the FC rack is DEFINATELY a noticeable difference, as Jim states. I run it, and don't really like it. Not nearly as comfortable to navigate in turns. That difference is ratio made a real difference...

This will obviously require that i source a spare FD rack to do then, no way i'm going to have my car down for an undetermined amount of time for something like this.
