Low horsepower numbers...=*(

a couple of weeks ago as my car was at XS engineering for a power FC install, they dynoed the car at.....approx 240 hp... which kind of surprised me actually...here's whats on the car so far

-mild street port
-hks downpipe
-blitz nurspec catback
-adam c's intake mod
-power FC
-Apex'i bov
-Koyo radiator
-NGK spark plugs
-ACT Single Plate clutch

the car is kept to 10psi, no boost leaks

i would expect, with the above for the hp to at least rise ABOVE stock levels?? would the power drop so much after around 90k on the chassis?

could there be something i'm overlooking? the catalytic converter is still stock, as is basically everything else, i haven't replaced the intercooler and i'm in need of an oil change, but i don't think that would make a huge difference....

the dyno sheet is attached-

thanks for your help! btw, if you guys have any suggestions for getting to 300 hp please share thank you!

it is possible that your catalytic converter is clogged. it is also possible that you have slightly low compression numbers. the first order of business is to inspect your cat and get a compression test. to achieve 300 horsepower youre going to have to turn up the boost.

edit: it also appears you have some ignition breakup at the top of your power band. i would check your trailing coild, plugs, wires.

clogged cat could be the culprit. Just throw in a midpipe and retune it have you checked all of your vacuum hoses to make sure they haven't slipped off?

The number that you posted IS above stock levels. The numbers on your dyno chart are for Rear Wheel Horsepower. The stock RX-7 power rating of 255 is measured at the flywheel. When you look at all the driveline losses, this equates to about 217-220 RWHP.

yep, i agree. if you want more power, turn up the boost...

BTW: id be very careful of the tuning and amount of fuel availble on the stock system when trying to get to 300rwhp. it is possible from what i have read but your running kinda close to the edge.

Seems good to me. The only power mods are the port, downpipe, catback and intake. 240 hp at 10 psi sounds good to me!

My bone stock car with a tired motor and nothing but a downpipe dynoed at 210 years ago.

It sounds right to me too. Replace the stock cat, and turn the boost up to 12 pounds and have it tuned. You should be in the 265-275 rwhp range when that happens.

Your mods that effect HP are really:

DP
CB
modded stock intake
PFC
Street port (won't help too much since your running restrictive intake)

You need a intake and IC. A med sized SMIC should work great. Probably 12psi also.

My friend Dylan(skywarpR) Dyno'ed at 276 hp I believe with the exact same mods other than he was running apexi filters..

You should be around 280-300 rwhp.

You need a competant tuner

I agree 240 is above stock.... If you want to be safe you can turn it up to 12 -14 psi, on the stock turbos... I was running 12 Psi on the stock ecu, and fuel system, for 1+ Years, and never had an issue...
I did replace the injectors after 55-60k mi. and it ran for another 10+ k.... before I wrecked it... but New Free flowing injectors and a helthy pump had something to do with it I'm certain.

14 psi is the threshold where the stockes tend to generate more heat than power, and you'll detonate unless you run race gas...

Good luck !

I'm with turbojeff, stock air box and 10psi...first, you can only suck so much air out of a restrictive box and two, not taking advantage of the port work at 10psi.

his power is dipping at 6.5k.

Ok... no need to bring out again your years of experience with working on FDs, which I respect But these numbers are way optimistic for rwhp at 10psi, dont you think ?

He is not running a restrictive intake

What's with all the 'get a midpipe' malarkey? FDs are capably of running very high horsepower numbers with the stock cat.

A midpipe or lack thereof is not the problem here.

You may have a bad cat. However, those numbers are not too bad for your mods. With an intercooler, you should be able to up the boost, re-tune, and get much closer to 300 rwhp ......... if your cat is OK.

I meant the IC along with the stock intake is restrictive. The stock IC and has high pressure drop across the core. The IC is part of the intake tract and good upgraded IC won't fit with the stock intake. So IMHO it is a waste of time to cut up an airbox if you want 300hp at the wheels. 300hp on the stock IC leads to overworking the stock turbos and hot intake temps.

Indeed,
When I installed the PFS IC/intake combo (only my second power mod, after the catback), i made a real difference in actual acceleration (all that really matters)... The stock setup is a loser.

Sorry guys, I have to disagree. I have around 300 rwhp with my setup, which includes my stock airbox mod. See my sig for mods.

I didn't say it was impossible.

How do estimate 300rwhp? Verified by dyno, ET? IIRC many guys with the M2 Stage 3 were a little below 300rwhp with the main cat. Do you have a stock cat?

What boost level? I noticed the MBC.

Otherwise you have a modded airbox, CB, DP, y-pipe and small SMIC?

You have a different intercooler. And at what boost level is that?

The point really is, I think this guy is figuring he's have more horsepower given things like a ported motor, and the reality is, he's probably not reaping any advantage with that port, as it tries to suck air through the stock IC. Engines are essentially air pumps...

He needs to replace the intercooler, and make sure that cat isn't clogged, and turn the boost up to 12-13 if he wants to see anything.

Not really, especially the 280 rwhp. Remember his engine is streetported. He's a little low, not real bad.
