Loud woosh and some smoke

I am getting a very loud "Wooosh" sound usually around 4,500 rpms when I get on the throttle. It is not at all progressive, it will just abruptly start making the sound. I'm thinking it is where the car is switching to the 2nd turbo that this happens.

The car has also been idling a little rough at times (stalled out as well) and a bit on the smokey side durring start up.

If it were a normal vac leak, I'd assume I'd get a progressively louder leak as the rpms went up, not a sudden sound. I don't have a boost gauge on it currently but it feels like it is still building boost on the smaller turbo.

The smoke came at about the same time so I'm thinking I killed a turbo or maybe a controller. Any ideas?

Thanks!

check your ic couplers. sounds like a boost leak. u should notice a drastic decrease in power.

if u have stock couplers and hoses take them off and inspect them by bending and manipulating them. its tough to see tears in them sometimes. i would start with the coupler on the y pipe. i have found it to usually be the culprit.

Check your CRV for your secondary turbo. It sounds like it may be opening up... Hell you're really close to me... If you're in Everett at this time I'd be happy to take a look and help you diagnose your problem. But it sounds like it's a CRV issue, I would think possibly the y-pipe coupler but it should open up under primary boost as well...

If you're in Lake Oswego and need help there are plenty of very helpful FD owners down there who you could summon for a second opinion

This is actually way out of date at this point. I'm now in Tigard, OR so I'm sure I could find someone to help if I need. I'll take a look at it. I started reading after I posted this and am seing several things that suggest at 4500 RPMs the CRV should be doing its job. The primary turbo seems to be doing fine, it just tapers off. I have been putting off doing the vac lines but I think it is time to get some viton valves and go to work on it... I'll make sure I inspect the air fittings along the way.

Thanks a bunch.

Don't forget the couplers on each end of the crossover pipe. A cut in there can be much less obvious than the big split shown in the above thread.
