Lots of questions about buying an RX-7 93'-95'

Detroit, MI (LIVE IN NORTH)
I was thinking about buying an RX-7 because they are pretty cheap now a days. Right now I drive a 2004 Grand Am GT and want a rare car thats pretty quick. I'v heard the RX-7 can be jerky, or rough like trans-ams/cameros. Can that be fixed? I heard snow is devestating to the car, which of course isn't good in any RWD car, but it seemed to be worse with this car. Maybe get expensive tires? And yes I will have to drive it in snow everyonce in a while. (can get up to a foot)

> Is there a big difference between the 93', 94', and 95' models? If so, which one is better.

> How hard is it to mantain the vehicle? How often engine needs to be rebuilt? How often DO YOU have to fix problems with the car honestly.

> How smooth is the ride and can you improve it? (Suspension)

> How well does the shifting gearbox switch gears compared to other MT cars.

> When looking for an RX-7, how many miles is too many? A lot are around 70-130k.

> How well do YOU like your RX-7? Please tell me all the things you dislike about it.

These were just the things I could list at the top of my head, I will add more later. Any help would be great. Thanks...

All of these questions are answered in the stickies at the top of this section. If this is going to be your daily driver it's not your best bet for a car, you'd be best off to keep your grand am for daily use or get some kind of beater.

Dude,

a 10 year old RX7 will, spank your Grand am
in any car comparison catagory.. except for room.
Faster, stops better, looks better and handles better.
A RX7 is truely one of the Fastest/true sport cars
ever to come out of Japan. With that being said.

a RX7 can be fickle. IF not taken care of properly.
Like any fast high HP vehicles.. They need to be taken
care of. I drove my FD for 7 years as a daily driver.

As you may already know.. PIMPING/Playing isn't cheap.
If you are worried about Ride, comfort and cost of going
fast and faster. Dude Just buy a Playstation and RENT
Grand Turismo, and Keep your Grand am..

OH yea one more thing.. Comparing a Japanese Flagship, to any American car. isn't a fair comparison.
Japs win hands down.

Keep your car.

Reasons...
1.) Birthday June 18, 1987
2.) You wouldn't have a daily driver
3.) Driving an FD in the snow is not a good idea, especially with your lack of experience.
4.) You obviously lack just about any knowledge of this vehicle.
5.) You have a nearly brand new vehicle that you probably didn't pay for, be happy!

Even if he is young, we have to give him some credit here. I mean, his post has already proved, he speaks the English language better than half the posters on this website! Thank heavens it's not another post that sounds like this...

I mean like WTF?! With all the posts recently, you would think that spell-check in MSWord, had some sort of trial membership plan. I am glad at least this guy, while he may have ignored the stickies and FAQs, had the brains, to at least post in a clear, and concise manner. Good luck with the car's REL749 but like many others here I am going to recommend you stick with another car for a while. The FD's have a habit of being slightly unforgiving, not a good car to learn on, ESPECIALLY not a good car to learn extreme weather, defensive maneuvers on. I would stick with the Grand Am, and get an FD later on in life. Your insurance will thank you.

It's so sad, but so true at the same time. Fritz brought up another good point, insurance.

thats pretty funny ^

I don't see any stickys where my questions were covered...

Sorry to bring this up after it has been covered already. My apologies, and yes I did pay for the car I have now. It's a 2 year lease. I wanted to get an idea now so when my lease is up (aug-oct 2005') I wouldn't have so much trouble finding another car. I see pretty cheap rx-7's on autotrader for around $14 - $18k. i like the rx-7's because there are so many mods for them too. and rare.and theres nothing i could do to handle better in snow? I could probably invest around 5k into the car to fix it up.

Thats another thing I was curious about, the insurance for an RX-7. Would it be that much higher than what I'm paying now? ($210/mth)

It has a lot of information that you'll need regarding reliability, modifications, etc.

This car is not a car to use as a daily driver, and most certainly not in the snow. I would also not suggest this or any other high powered RWD car for someone with so little driving experience, it's just a receipe for disaster.

As far as insurance, at your age, you'll most likely be paying more than $210.

At 18 your insurance will be at the very minimum, unless you own the car outright, which you wont unless your parents buy the vehicle for you, in which case you should'nt own the car anyways, will be 250.00 per month.

And thats the least of it, everyone here agrees that this is a badass car, we are all in love with this vehicle. But we're honest too, this car is a total piece of **** when it comes to reliability. I dont care what reliability mods you do, this car is far from a daily driver. Save your money and buy and s2000. Great little car and can be had used at a pretty fair price.

Hell for 18k, you can pick up a used C5 (Current Corvette). I have seen 97's go for around that.

I was thinking about getting an RX-8 or a 350z used of course and I figured it would be a low payment. but i dont know if i like the S2000, it has a digital spedometer which i dont like very much, and its a convertable. where i live the top would only be down for 3-4 months out of the whole year. It seems like the RX-7 has more mods than most cars out there. I dunno anymore, before the rx7 caught my attention, i was planning to get a 350z or a rx8. I have plenty of time but i just cant make up my mind...

i was thinking about a supra too, they are rare and very fast... but those are probably no more reliable than the rx7

supra would be much more reliable, from what i've gathered man. the 7 is a love affair... and like all women, it can be a REAL bitch (i've not had a single problem though knock on wood)

Just think of it like this:

Supra = Rock

RX-7 = Egg

There is your reliability comparison.

S2000 are fun cars, I almost traded my FD for one but is not a unique fun car. I'm going to get one as a daily driver tho

yeah like everyone said, RX-7 is a "either you love it or hate it" car. If you end up getting one, go with that $5000 and get a POS car because you are going to need it. RX-7 ARE NOT CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!

The 92-95 FD RX-7 known as the "series-6" in many circles is now 12 years old mostly. Over 70% of the US issue cars where sold in 92 alone. 93, 94, 95 they dropped sales considerably.

The choice to go for is the last of the series. As for differences, very little, minor as they saved the main updates for the series-7 (96-98) version that didn't get exported to the USA

so its best to buy an rx7 as a second car. theres just something about the rx7 that makes me want it. the rx8 has better reliability i believe. but those arn't as fast as the rx7 or as easy to mod. think an rx8 with twin turbo (if possible) could actually compete with an rx7? cause i know a stock rx7 would destroy an rx8. i wish they would have made the rx8 as powerful as the rx7.

Didn't the 93 have some major reliablity issue that was sorted out in 94 95? I thought it had to do with some sort of restrictor plate not being in the right place or something. Can't remember oh well.

not afaik..

just to give you the lowdown on the car.. i bought mine for a dd, it had a new engine in it... it is now 1 year later. the engine blew (and took the turbos with it), i cant afford the insurance so it has no tags and i still owe 12,000 on it. its going to cost me around 5000 to get it running again just so it can sit in a driveway while im at school cause the insurance is so high.

i love the car, but its just not practical on an income lower than 60,000.

if i were given the chance i wouldent have bought it for another 4 years. do yourself a big favor and buy something easy on the wallet.

I see youre in Michigan. You will need a second car. I cant even imagine snow in this car. I cant get traction 1st-3rd in the rain, let alone snow.

How many miles is too many? I would avoid any car with original motor and over 80k miles. Anything higher and I would only get if there was a rebuild involved.
