I take it you blew an engine?

That looks like a side seal sitting in there.

There doesn't seem to be any damage to the turbos, though I am not really sure what to look for or what I can see without being able to see the "hot" side of the turbines. I know they turn very freely, so that has to be good...right?

You'll need to crack them open and take a look at the turbines to know for sure.

The blades could be hammered, but if there's no metal shavings or whatever contacting the turbine housing, they'll spin freely.

Yikes....no offense, but that photo would be a pretty depressing discovery for me...

Yeah, looking at them from what I can see they are okay, no damage to the impellers.

But how about manifold cracks like these? Is this bad? If so, how bad?

Not bad. But the top one may cause gasket leakage soon. Drill thru the tip at least, and maybe get it weld repaired.

You MUST remove the turbine housings to inspect them. Looking in the turbine outlet won't allow you to see the damage, since it is at the ends of the turbine blades. I am nearly certain your turbines are damaged based on the stuff that was sitting in your manifold.

Those cracks are actually pretty small. I've seen the "bridge" completely broken in half without problems. Theoretically with a huge crack some exhaust energy will leak past the wastegate lowering boost. In reality it doesn't make a practical difference.

Well, better that now than you thinking the turbos were fine and reinstalling them later on, then wondering why they're not producing the boost that they used to...

Yea, like Max and Kento said...you have to remove the turbing housing to see the entire turbine wheel and shaft. I dont see anyway that they couldnt be ruined if you have all that **** in your exhaust. The turbine wheels are very delicate and a spec of apex seal going thru there will ruin them.....I'd say from that pic they just about HAVE to have had a spec or two or twenty go thru them unless you were maybe just sitting at idle when it happened but I doubt that lol.

Sorry for the engine failure....they suck

Stephen

So how hard is it to break down the turbos? And what sort of seals/gaskets would I need to replace? Any links to anything on this? Or should I just search it?

I examined the wheels as far as I can see with an extremely bright light I have for just such stuff, there is NO visible damage to any part of the turbines, there is no scuffing on the sides of the cast iron turbo manifold, but you say there could be hidden damage? And yeah I will definitely check it all out before putting these on the rebuild, this is WAYYYYY to much hassle to not do it completely right. And the turbos DO have 93K miles on them, so a rebuild on them wouldn't hurt anyway.

It is very simple and you don't need any gaskets or seals, etc. to put them back together. There are several bolts with 10mm heads and little plates under them that hold the turbo center housing to the turbine housing. Remove those, and the turbo will come apart, allowing you to see the whole turbine wheel.

The problem is that you're only examining the "exit" side of the turbine blades; it's the intake side (only seen when you pull the turbos apart) where the real damage will occur.

Rog-O! Looks like its time to do some MORE disassembly! Thanks for the info, everyone.

You know you've done it right when you jettison a short apex seal spring along with the entire apex seal...
