Looking to get into a Gen 3 RX7, any tips?

I am looking for a new project car and i am 95% sure i want to get a Gen 3 RX7. reason being i have always loved these cars, and i want a to work on something new. you name it i have built big V-8 to 4 bangers. never a rotary though. i know these cars will be a whole new world to me. i just dont want to be one of those guys who are afraid to work on a rotary. And where i am from that is vary commen.

My plan is to get one with a blown engine and start from there. i am very mechanicly inclined, (as you can see though, not to good with the spelling) so i think this will be a challange but nothing i can handle. it will just take some time to get it done. because i am going to make sure it is done right the first time.

if you have any tips for me on buying, working on, or good parts please post. Thanks.

First and foremost, you should know how expensive it is to work on rotaries. Second, do a search on the forum for tips and advice. Try some keywords like; new to rx'7s, new fd owner, rx-7 newbie, fd newbie, etc... Lastly, look back at some posts from yesterday and beyond. There's a post by an interested person everyday with plenty of advice. Good luck!

Sorry, didn't mean to discourage you from getting one of these great cars....
FD = FD3S = code for the 3rd gen RX-7. If you have any questions you can PM me or someone else on the forum

ok i have found three cars withing 700 miles that are really nice. everything is perfect(or so they tell me) besides the engine needs to be re-done. with the prices i have seen i should be able to find one for 6500-7900 to work on. or so i hope.

There is one company called Showdown that will work on rotary in my town, or even close to my town. through them i can get a stock rebuild for 2000. partly because i know them and they will cut me some slack.

the problem is though i know i am going to upgread this car as much as i can, without runnign the risk of completly killing my the car.

i have seen talk of streetport and 3mm seals. as far as i can tell most people are for the streetport. first off what exactly is streetport.

also at whatpoint would hte 3mm seals be needed. i dont know the seals are and what they do.

ok, from reading over my last post i have realized that i need to read over the post before i post it.

I do know what the 3mm vs. 2mm seals that people are talking about are used for.

the problem with me just getting a stock re-build is becasue i know there has to be aftermatket parts for the internal part of the engine that will make the car perform better and last longer once i start to realy upgread. what would some of these parts be??

i have another question.

who is the best company to deal with for performance parts for RX7 mods. (on a side note: i dont have to worry about passing emisions, i live in michigan and we dont have to test are cars every year.)

the reason i ask this is becase for my talon i delt with buscher racing. these guys are the BEST with DSM cars and i have made a good buisness relationship with them. i would like to do the same with a really good company for RX7's.

That would be in reference to the apex seals (the rough equivalent of piston rings), on the tip/apex of each tri-faced rotor.

A list of what goes on in a typical rebuild, can be found here. http://www.revolutionrotary.com/parts.html

However, if you are looking to build a more powerful RX-7, and don't have to worry about emissions, you may want to consider getting your engine ported during the rebuild, or even doing it yourself if you feel comfortable with learning, and taking on the task. Depending on the type of port you do, your engine will experience good power gains. You will be working with a 13B-REW 4-port engine. Here is some info if you want to do some searching on it. http://www.mazdarotary.net/porting.htm Ignore the HP numbers though, as they don't apply to the 13B-REW specifically.

Since you are new to the rotary, here is a great site from which you can learn a good bit of general info as well. Easy to understand, and will point you in the right direction. http://travel.howstuffworks.com/rota....htm/printable

There is no 'best' company, as it really depends on what your goals are for the car. There are many great aftermarket companies though, and their products can be found from the sponsors at the top of this site, or the sponsors above www.nopistons.com Also, check www.gothamracing.com --it's a great site. For basic parts, which everyone needs every once in a while, you can't beat Malloy Mazda in Virginia. Always give them a try if you need factory parts. Don't forget to ALWAYS shop around for the best price on the product you want either. The "for sale", and "group buy sections" of the forums, and ebay are also great places to look.

Good luck with your project, and have fun-- but most of all patience.

Welcome to the club.
