RI Looking for FD first upgrades advice

I have a bone stock FD with 73K miles and am looking to add some bolt on upgrades to it this summer. My goal is to not mess with with the reliability of the car and maybe get just a little bit more power out of it.

Based on what I have read on the forum, I was planning on getting these parts.
  • apexi intakes / arc induction box (any advice on which one is better for low end torque?)
  • racing beat dual exhaust
  • apexi powerfc
  • pfc downpipe
  • do I need to get a hi-flow cat?

I was hoping to get some of these parts used from this forum / ebay and one thing I am unsure about is what to look for when buying a used PowerFC? If I get one that was pulled from a highly modified RX7, what do I need to do to get it to work in mine and not cause any damage to the car.

Also, if I am adding these parts in a couple at a time, what order should I get them (can I add powerfc first?)

I would appreciate any advice on this.

Search for "reliability mods"

The first things should be
AST & downpipe
the archive is a good resource for many of them

Yeah you can find a lot on here about this subject. Personally though before going for power adders dont forget about the small simple things. The first thing I would recommend before adding more power is to get some good gauges, mainly temp gauges. The stock one is not accurate at all.

Free up some of the air with a nice intake and exhaust as well. Simple additions but worth it. The stock cat flows pretty nicely but upgrading it couldnt hurt.

If you're looking to adding a bit of power without loosing any ''reliability'' then just go with the downpipe.

You might want to spend some time reading the FAQ thead stickied in this forum.

THen you can come back and ask more specific and informed questions.

FAQ.

just know that if you get apexi intake.. you might have to fab piping ltr if you want to run fmic.

AST + d/p + all other reliability mod. that will take you some time and money. if you haven't change out the fuel filter.. do so. clean your injectors (check out re engineering). vac hoses if needs be.

get some gauges or pfc to monitor your eng. steamclean your engine or run ai according to hc.

and if you have extra money... you should start saving up for a new/used/rebuilt motor

Thanks for your responses.

I'll start with the AST & downpipe & intake for now.

If you decide to buy the PFC, then it's important to get one of the right serial number for your car. There are PFCs that work with later JDM cars and ones that work with US market cars. You'll see both on eBay and if you're not careful they'll sell you the wrong one.

The PFC can come from any car but you want to have it reprogrammed to the PFC "base map" since your car is basically stock.

I do not think you need a high flow cat. There are maintenance / reliability items I would strongly recommend before that.

d.p and intake! really?

i would've thought the AST and Radiator would be the better "first things that need to be addressed".

After that you need to start saving for the rebuild in your very near future. 73k on a stock RX is a ticking time bomb.

*Priority one is COOLING. Make sure you system is solid, hoses good, metal AST and radiator. As much distilled water as you can get away with for your climate. In RI, probably 60/40 or 70/30 with fresh coolant. As mentioned above, you also need a gauge to monitor it. The stock one is worthless. If you want reliability, it starts here.

*If you still have the stock pre-cat, remove it and install a DP. Heat-coat it or put header wrap on it to control radiant heat. This is a "two-for-one" mod...a performance adder and a reliability mod.

*Whatever Intake you choose, try to have it source air from outside the engine bay. M2/SR Motorsports, Pettit or Fighters Garage with the shield etc. If you like stealth, contact adamc on a "cheap bastard" kit for the stock airbox and put a K&N in it. I can attest you feel it.

*If your truly "bone stock" you need a boost gauge to monitor turbos, and boost levels. .

*You don't need a PFC with these mods as long as you stay at stock boost levels. See "Boost Gauge" above.

since sgtblue makes some good points. I'd like to add that: A temp gauge should be your first purchase. This is a must in my book and has saved my **** numerous times. thanks for reminding!
