Looking for 3rd gen - saving.....

I have a question that might sound silly, but it is something that has been on my mind. Right now I own a 1st gen, but I would love own a third gen. I am currently saving for one, but I won't be there probably until next year. My question is, are these cars going up in value, or do they have yet some to fall before increasing again? I'm sure a year won't make much difference, but a few years? Thanks in advance!

Seems to depend on the geographical area, and the overall 'FD saturation' of that area.
Meaning, there are some cities where you can go to a dozen used car lots and find an FD here and there. There are other places where you never see one for sale, ever. Look at where they were sold in the greatest numbers orginally, and usually those areas still have a fairly significant amount buzzing about (coastal locations, especially California, New York, Florida, etc.) so the old "supply and demand" axiom is in effect. Go up to the north-central states, where there were....7 sold over 3 years, and you have to pay the big bucks to get one.
Here in my part of Kansas they are so rare that people CONSTANTLY are like, "what the hell IS that?" and when you explain, most of them shake their heads and scratch their *** and proclaim, "Golly....sure didn't know Mazda ever made anything like THAT!"
Compared to south Florida, where there are dozens of FDs running around, and to even get an eyebrow raised you have to have some wild-*** mods to single you out from the others.
Whether an FD will ever really go up in value is a moot point, to me. Because a car's value is simply what another is willing to pay, or what an owner will accept to sell. Many people have asked me what it would take to sell mine. I usually say no less than $30K and mean it. I might not sell at any price (well....within reason. Someone says "here is $100,000" I'm going to take the bucks and invest it, you know?) simply because the car is WORTH it to me. So what does that make the car "worth"? Obviously more than blue book. Because the blue book value will ALWAYS continue to fall. Don't care what it is. Hell....you can't touch an XKE Jaguar for less than $80,000 these days (and that one will need a LOT of work!) but the blue book value is far less than that.

Smile Looking for FD3 Savings

There is only a finite number of FD3 out there.
Look at the Sticky its listed by State. If your
question is to the timing of the buy...do the research, it
took me a year to find my FD3.

I suggest you buy it local. It's a beautiful car but be prepared
to spend $$$ on maintenace and upkeep.

I do not think your're going to make money on this car.
Anything invested is for your driving pleasure not for a future
gain.

Thanks for the replies! I don't want the car to make money in the future, I just want it for the pleasure of owning one. Another question I have is, if I am familiar with rebuilding a rotory engine and have rebuilt a second gen, will I be able to do my own work on a third gen and are they mechanically similar? An example: If the apex seals went, can I change it myself, or is there something diffferent about them that makes it harder to do the work yourself? Thanks again in advance!

13B and 13BREW are very similar. If you've worked on a 13B, you can work on a 13BREW with no problems.
