Learn me on Rotary!
Hey RX-7 Club! My name is Ryan and I just signed up on this forum.
I drive a Honda currently and have ALWAYS wanted to go rotary. Never had to knowledge and/or money to dive in...until recently. I just got news that a friend has an FD sitting in a garage collecting dust. All I know it it's a 3rd Gen, black, and motor and tranny are poo. It is almost deffinate that I'll be selling my Honda for this car and fixing it up.
-OK-
What I would like to know is where/how can I educate the crap out of myself with rotaries. I know the internet is so abundant, any particular URL's? I want to learn engine specs, JDM V USDM, who's the top aftermarket resaler. Where can I buy imported JDM motors, what's a good tranny...etc.etc.
Please just post some URL's, some pics...whatever you think I can sponge into my fat-headed brain.
Much apprectiated

We have a newbie/FAQ sticky to get you started. I don't know if the FAQ includes, it, but www.fd3s.net has a wealth of information (some is slightly outdated, but you can still learn).
One thing I'll say right away is that an FD ain't no Honda. You don't need to import "JDM" items like motors and such....
You have much to learn grasshopper....you can go through the archives and current posts on this site and learn much...
Welcome to the insanity!

I have to get rid of the Honda. What I'mma do is get a $500 car (an A to B car) and go to work with that while the Rotary is assembled.
Thanks a ton, fast responses too!

Just incase the only thing you know about rotaries is that they spin, heres a link that should teach you the basics of rotary engines.
http://www.rotaryengineillustrated.com/index.html
Anyways, good luck with the possible FD. And remember, always SEARCH and read the newbie FAQ sticky before you ask a question, or prepare to be flamed.
Good luck.

Ok, I guess the summer's here so a lot of people are startin to look into gettin into something hot without realizing what they are asking for...........
Ok cuz, first of all, you need to realize that this engine is nothing like a piston engine. I got my 7 about a year ago and up to that point had already been seriously underway on a subaru project that was almost near completion with a rebuilt engine and a t3/t4 custom tubo kit. Knew a decent amount on pistons, but it doesn't really help you an enormous amount when it comes to rotaries. You pretty much have to throw out most of your knowledge on pistons and start learning from the bottom up. Simple physics still applies, but that is about it.
If the car is already busted, the problem you are going to run into is that you will never really know how the car is supposed to run until you're invested about 10K into the car (you're looking at about 3-4K for the transmission rebuild, another 4K for en engine rebuild, and if the car has been sitting around for quite a while, at least another 2K in miscellaneous parts and fixes), and that is only going to get you to stock, aftermarket mods for this car re expensive, just look at the prices of an intake for an RX7 for example. A honda intake will run you about $150-250, but an RX7 intake will run you about $350-500, and it only goes up from there.
The car also has to be babied, you gotta change the oil religiously at 2000 miles, keep it out of traffic and always monitor the oil and water levels.
...............Oh, and also, the car cn sometimes randomly catch on fire if you don't know what to look for........... just a heads up.
I don't want to scare you, if you are seriously interested in the car, go for it man. I have to admit I didn't know a thing about 7s about 3 years ago, and I only got my first RX7 last year (about a year this june), but I've learnt quite a few serious lessons already on this car just like quite a few people on this forum. I used to own a honda, and sometimes I miss it because you can beat on those things and they'll just take it and keep goin, but you have to realize, while a honda will never be an RX7, and RX7 will never be a honda, you got me??
