Laser engraving on 13B housings
Laser engraving on 13B housings
Bought this block from Rapid Rotors a year or so ago, and just starting to clean it up and prep it for paint when I came across some laser engraving on the rotor housings. I checked my non-running short block I just pulled out of the car and no such thing.
Are these housings from Mazda, or some other builder? I would expect markings like this on a newer engine, but something from 1994? There are some other punch markings on the tops of the housings as well, but I didn't get any quick shots of them.

That'd kind of what I was wondering as well. The intakes on the housings also look semi cleaned up. I tried comparing them to the block I just pulled, but it's so caked in oil and grime I can't tell if the new one has port work done or not. I'll post pictures later tonight, or tomorrow of the intake ports.

I've seen this before and wondered what it was.
Difference is, I saw it on an engine that came here from Japan in a RHD car.
I thought it was some sort of factory marking that is trying to tell us something, maybe factory remanufactured or replacement housings from the factory... By chance, do the numbers match anything else of the car- IE a few digits of the chassis number or engine number?

I bought the short block already built with 5k miles on it, so I have no idea if it originally came from Japan, I bought it out of Seattle from Rapid Rotors. If there was a way to track the serial number on the front iron maybe I could find out? I'd be interested to see if the remans from Mazda or the newer jdm blocks come with them.
It's Mazda's way of tracking housings during the manufacturing process and when they're shipped out to customers/dealers. It has detailed information about whom was on the production floor, the date, inspectors name, ext...

correct, this current system was introduced for the Rx8, so mid 2003, or newer manufactured housings will have a stamp like this
