larger dual oil coolers

Does the FD need bigger oil coolers?
The oil seems to go black quickly even at 1000km.I mean really black. I run 1 bar consistently. Is it because it gets cooked in there because the oil coolers are too small? Anyway was browsing for oil coolers and I found a nice and reasonably priced one by CWR.Bigger, better and quite cheap compared to the Japanese alternatives. What do you guys think?

Upgraded oil coolers are a good idea, but if you are boosting at 1 bar consistently with out any fuel upgrades than i think black oil is not your biggest worry. What do you have done to your car?

Second Gen Oil Cooler Rocks!!!!

I'm using one from an 89 Rx7 and its badass. Its not too expensive to get it to work but I went ahead and got custom lines made. Its one of the biggest factory oil coolers anywhere. If you look around, you won't find anything else for the value. I got mine for 15.00 from a junk car, but I've seen them go on Ebay for 20-60 bucks.

Say superman:

Wanna share a pic or more detailed explanation of how you set up the FC oil cooler on a FD?

The oil goes black quickly from blow-by and fuel dilution not over temp oil.

Stock R1/R2 coolers work great. CWR offers upgrades that seem to have much more durable fins. One stock oil cooler for the other models is fine for moderate use but I've heard of oil temps in the 240F range on the track. That is too hot for oil.

#65 on the mandatory FD upgrade list

the jap guys who engineered this car need to be slapped around....so many fragile, under engineered, and cheap *** parts on a car that was supposedly designed for the track....what a joke

I would never race this car unless it was completely overhauled and I had 30k into it, and at that point I'd get a used 911, Z06, or one of those ultra lightweight racers (Rotorsports here in Charlotte is building some race cars with 12A motors that weigh about 1100 pounds, what a gas)

I'll stick with bikes for the track....relatively cheap and so easy to work on

Could one use an inexpensive cooler from Summit of the same dimentions as the stock coolers? And of course fabricate the lines? Or is there something unique about the FD coolers?

I've been using the CWR kit for about 3 months now. It made a huge difference in my oil temps which were running very hot 100-120C. I had previously had 1 stock oil cooler which was pretty beat up.

The installation first without the ducts, and with old stock bumper dropped a good 15C down into the 90s and since then, I added the CF ducts and the 'psuedo' MB bumper with larger openings to fully channel the air into the cooler, and also the Scoot hood, my oil temps are now around 75's typically, with 10c swing either way.

I am curious about how an FC oil cooler was adapted to fit an FD? Could you elaborate on what is needed to install one, or for that matter, two for a duel system?

If you want to fabricate a system yourself, don't forget the oil thermostat.

a lot of japanese tuners actually do this also. They use two big oil coolers for the driver/passenger side and then the FC oil cooler in the middle. They mount it somewhere so it doesn't block flow to the radiator. I was thinking of doing this conversion myself but don't know how much work is involved

I would be purchasing an oil temp gauge to verify my oil was getting too hot before I sunk nearly $1k into the CWC upgrade....

I've seen research data that the stock FD oil cooler is actually very good. Replacing it with anything near the same size would be pointless. The only reason I see to upgrade, especially if you have an R-model, is if you actually race the car.

FD3S_RS: What kind of oil are you using? Are you changing the filter every time? Try changing to synthetic if you are not already using. Most people have experienced a 5-10 degree temp drop from the synthetic.

The oil gets black because it doesn't all drain out during a typical oil change. Some oil remains in the oil cooler(s). Another good reason to change oil every 3k or less.

I thought about doing that, I even made a post about it. It was a while ago though; anyway, I think I worked it out and it turns out that it was more expensive than the CWR set. I looked at the B&M coolers for big V8's they are over 22,000 BTU's. I think I'm going to play with that Idea some more and make myself a bad *** system.

Another thing to consider about the CWC kit it that the they provide the ducting for the new coolers. Thats hard to make yourself.

Ok, In my case I have alot of room in the front of the car for this mod. A greddy 3 row intercooler and koyo radiator, now the FC oil cooler sits in between near where the drivers side oil cooler was. Its not centered. I used the old banjo's to make new lines and also bought push on fittings. I'll try to take pics tommorrow but my digi cam sucks. It looks great, almost like another intercooler. I forgot to mention I'm also running 3 oil filters. The factory one and 2 fram performance filters. I'll try to get pics of everything.

I am looking at the oil cooler upgrade at rotaryextreme. They seem to look very nice and the size is always a bonus. Anybody running one of those or is everyone running the CWR coolers??

The twin coolers is a must have IMO. I have had the CWC kit for about 8-9 months now and I have never seen temps higher than 90C.

I would not recommend getting the CWR kit if you already have the R1 package w/ 2 coolers. I would also suggest getting the Rotary extreme dual 25 row. I would have if I could do it all over again.

Also if you have an R1 you might look into just changine the coolers. I heard Mazdaspeed came out with some larger replacement coolers.
