Rich,
I've been running the MXs also for a few years now and am very happy. I generally run 10 PSI of boost so low 300 RWHP similar to your dad's car but 255/17s rather than the 245/16s your dad would probably run. My previous FD had the 712s so I know where you are coming from - they sucked.
The MXs are excellent in the wet providing similar levels of wet grip as the Toyo T1S. They also have good grip across a wide range of temps. I remember they were still quite grippy when I drove them around NYC and LI in the winter. They are not overly loud or anything like KDWs or other performance oriented tires. So from a day to day live-ability perspective I have been very impressed with them.
As for performance, I also have been satisfied and impressed with them. The sidewalls are reasonably stiff resulting in good feedback and great turn in. That was one of the major complaints that I had with the T1S. Turn is feels very precise both on street, on the autox and on track.
Overall grip is great. The tires grip well accelerating and also laterally on track or on the autox course. The tires communicate well and you I would characterize the breakaway characteristics as "smooth". You can tell when you reach their limits and it is controllable at the limit.
Price is excellent also.

I run the tires too, I love them, although I would rather run SO3's I like the MX just as well, works great in dry or wet whe I get caught in the rain.
I just had to get used to them since the sidewalls are'nt as hard as the SO3's so the turn in is a little on the slower side but I'm sure a little suspension tweaking will solve the problem.
