The stock car has one but it does not retard the timming if needed . The after market unit J&S knock sensor does retard timming but you need to have enough split between the leading and trailing timming to be effective

If you still have the stock ecu, it IS necessary, otherwise you will get a check engine light and it may cause other issues.

Why the hell wouldn't he reinstall the knock sensor? There's no reason not to.

Doesn't the stock ECU do *something* with the signal? I thought it retarded timing, just not enough to do much good. I'm pretty sure I read that it will slightly retard timing if it the sensor is missing. I know it will throw an error code.

the stock knock sensor and stock ecu do retard timing. Supposedly not as accurate as the J & S, but I would keep it. The PFC does not retard timing according to the knock sensor.

For what its worth, I was driving for a while on a Pettit ECU that had a problem with the knock sensor input...it thought it was missing, and so gave me the error code. Other than that I didn't notice any problems with it, but I probably wasn't operating at full capacity either, with the timing retarded. That ECU later died completely, however, so I can't do any further testing.
