'Klunking' noise and feel when aggressively shifting!

Please help me out.

When driving normally or shifting normally I have no noise or problem. When shifting aggressively I get a "klunk' in what seems like the rear under the car.

I would like to narrow the problem down so I can go on with my summer. It has been suggested that it is the PPF (power plant frame) being cracked or damaged. It has also been suggested to be a bushing in the rear of the car above or behind the differential.

Any suggestions or confirmations of what the problem could be?

Maybe someone out there has experienced the same problem and has remedied it.

Any advice or suggestion are welcome and will be checked out and fixed if found to be the culprit. Maybe I'll just change/fix all suggested issues and hope for the best?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

i would start by jacking the car up and wiggle the wheels back and forth listening for a clunk or any looseness. my car has the same problem. i have narrowed my problem down to the trailing arms bushings. good luck Tim.

I would say that noise would be the diff bushings.

If it isn't the diff bushings it could be the pillowball bushings or the trailing arm bushings, but those being bad would make noise more often than you currently describe. At least mine did.

I think whatever's causing it will be obvious when you get things apart for inspection. Cracked PPFs are, well, cracked. Bad diff bushings leak the fluid inside of them.

The other possibility is a damaged motor mount, but the sound in the rear suggests the other two.

The pillowball bushings in the rear suspension tend to make popping sounds when you move the car from being parked, not as much when you're under throttle and loading/releasing torque thru the drivetrain.

mine does the "pop" as dave described, but it also clunks when i let of the gas at low rpm in any gear and when i pump the brakes at speeds under 20 mph especially on a slope.

My experience

Yup, It could be your Diff Bushings, Pillow Ball Bushings, or your Trailing Arm Bushings.

I was getting a loud clunk when I did a quick U-turn or backing up. I turns out that many of my bushings were bad. I changed outthe Differential Bushings with Solid Nylon bushings from (www.rx7.com) $120.000. These solid bushings make the car feel more solid with less driveline slop. But, beware that the car becomes A LOT noisier because all of the vibration from the Diff get transmitted right to the frame.

I also changed out 6 Pillow ball bushings that I bought form Ray at Malloy Mazda, VA $356+/-. Some of mine were bad. They only last around 80,000 miles. Make sure you get new dust covers or make sure that the old dust covers are good and reuse them.

And lastly, my Trailing Arm bushings are bad. I need to install the JimLab bushings to finish up the job.

Search for DaleClark's or MaxCoopers write up's here on the forum for a "How-to" complete with pictures. You will need some spoecial tools to do the job. www.HarborFreight.com sells the tools needed pretty cheap:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=4065 This tool sometimes goes on sale for as low as $19.99! You will need Air tools if you go this route.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=33497 I bought this shop press. I have seen it on sale for as low as $79.99

If I can do it, ANYONE can. Good luck.

If you're hearing and/or feeling thumps in the rear of the car under hard shifts check for bad diff bushings or a cracked/broken PPF first.

Could be two different things but the noise while pumping the brakes under 20 mph is definitely suspension bushings. Check the toe links, trailing arms and pillowballs in that order.

My experience, I recently installed the rx7.com diff bushings in my FD and have experienced absolutely no additional noise or vibration.
