fyi - klunk is spelled clunk. not trying to bust your chops but if you spell it right you can search for all the past threads on that topic and you'll get lots of info, prices and pics on fixing that.

Normally a clunk from the rear is from a worn suspension bushing (aka pillowball)

I just replaced my pillowballs and still have that clunk when I shift hard. It can definitely be something else.

While pillowballs are a very likely problem source, and it's almost never a waste of time/money to replace them, there are other possible sources. Worn pillowballs often clunk when the car has been sitting still and the car is first moved. You can also remove your rear shocks and sway bar links and see if you can find any play in the pillowball joints.

Another clunk that I've experienced is broken fuel tank baffles - when you brake the fuel sloshes forward and bumps the metal baffle plates into the tank wall.

Another is the spare tire jack and handle - if these are loose they can rattle and bump.

I had a big time clunk in the rear, and bushings were the prolbem. The prolbem bushings for me were the center and outer bushings that are located on the lower suppension arm. Both sets on the left and right side of the car needed to be replaced - no more clunk though.

If you have the right tools it shouldn't take more than 2-4 hours to do all the pillow *****. If you've never replaced them before, 99% chance that's the cause of the problem. Alternatively if you have aftermarket trailing arms on your car, the spherical bearings can clunk under hard braking if they're worn.

How's your diff bushings? I thought it was my pillow *****, but it was def. the diff bushings (or motor mounts, changed them at the same time, clunk went away).

Info in this link. IMO, replace them all once you are in there. Get them from Ray at Malloy (also referenced in the link). They have great prices and quick shipping.

Thumbs down Use The Search Function!!

OP,

Everyone is 'spoon feeding' you the info, and links, when you could easily find the solutions yourself if you only invested A LITTLE time and searched!

And yes, I searched this topic many-a-years go, ordered my pillow ***** from Ray at Malloy and changed them myself. Everyone's time inputs are correct about how long it takes.

There aren't many things on an FD that someone hasn't already discussed. You just have to SEARCH!

Check all the problems areas people listed before purchasing though. I replaced my pillow ***** because people said it was the highest possible place for a clunk, replaced them and was still clunking. So I checked everything else and it was actually the inner lower arm bar bushing. Then the differential bushings were making noise, replaced those and now everything is quiet. Don't know if the pillow ***** were actually making noise, as I pulled them and replaced them I tossed them. Wish I saved my money at that time. Just something to consider. Oh well, good way of learning and now I know everything is tight. Good luck with the work.

+1. I've been on the forums for quite some time just doing searches for everything imaginable, and the great thing is that I usually find answers to all my questions.

The suspension thread is also in the FAQ section, which has a TON of other good info for FD owners.

I'm adding this ,( same thing from one of my threads but this might help in a searce.

So about a month ago I added the launch hit to help with some of the bushings and toe links in my 160K FD, This did not stop my mayjor clunking noises but did help the feel of the car. This week I added six new pillow ***** to the rearend. Theses ******* are expensive, $60 a pop at cost ($100 retail). They fixed all my noise problems from taking off to slowing down. Here are a few pic's of the destroyed pillow *****. Lets just say I got about 70k more miles out of these then most people do.
I installed them in about three hours in the garage.

3 new/3 old

1 new/ 1 old

Big thanks to Ray Crowe at Malloy mazda--His # is 703-490-8170

you will need more then a wrench for this job, there is 6 in total that should be replaced and they are wedged in very tightly, while you are at it replace the upper and lower control arm bushings as well so you don't have to get back to it again later on.
