just need a little info and some opinions
hey how are you all doing??? i just signed up cause im interested in buying a 3rd gen rx-7.
i was pretty set on getting a 95 240sx and droping a sr20det in there(good chance i still might) because befor that i was thinking bout a mkiv supra but they are to expensive and honestly dont look as good. i wouldnt mind a rx-7, actually id love one.
thats why its come down to a 240sx w/sr20 or a rx-7. the last gen rx looks nice as hell and with a nice areo kit can look like a straight up race car. only thing is iv heard by alot of people that they are unreliable as hell. iv searched this and all i usally find is yes its unreliable but so is any modded car or something along those line, also iv read the apex seal goes alot and thats a big big problem.
i was just wondering what are your opinions on the rx7 reliability and what should be known about it? also i know the rotory is alot diffrent than other engines so i was wondering even though its only a 1.8l(right?) will it put out higher horse power with less lag than a 4 banger?? cause ,say you have a 2.0l, to get 500hp or more it will real real bad does the small displacment of the rotory equall the same type of lag??? or can you you get 5-600hp with quick response???
also i tried to find info on the other mazda rotorys(2,3,4 rotor)but couldnt find much i was wondering are they as prone to the reliability issues or are the more bulletproof??? also are there any creadible us dealers of the 20b, ect..?? thanks alot

The motors displacement is 1.3L, and beyond that, cant really be compared to a reciprocating piston engine. There are virtually no similarities. Any small motor turbo motor that has a large enough turbo on it to make 500-600 horsepower is gonna have some lag. From what Ive read the 13b after being ported, fully built, with a largish turbo doesnt make maximum boost until ~4k rpm, there are alot of factors, and that is only what Ive read here on this forum from other peoples experience.

the 3gen rx7 can be a reliable car if you know how to maintain it...it has a 1.3L engine(hence the engine code 13B)...my suggestion is search search and search...call some experts up and what not to find out as much info as you can about the car, that way you shouldnt have any problems...if you do get the RX, remember that you cant just slap all kinds of bolt-ons on to it, thats usually the first mistake new FD owners make...to mod it, you have to upgrade the ECU...usually the best thing to do is to buy m2 Performance packages as they come with the basic upgrades and ecu to match it(www.m2performance.com)...

I think it's fair to compare it to a 2.6L 6-cylinder engine if you really have to compare it to a piston engine. If you treat it right and mantain it, you should have no problems. It's when you let it overheat by not having an aftermarket temp gauge or you blow it up by running lean that you hear the horror stories from.
You should probably stick to the S14 with SR20DET. I think to get an RX-7 you have to be ready to take on that task. It is a very picky car. You should have another car for when it's down, and you should be able to shell out a few thousand dollars if something DOES go wrong.
However, once you take it for a spirited drive and have 10 people ask you if it's a Ferrari, you forget about all the money you put into it, and remember how much you love the looks, handling, and power of the car.
