just got a CWC oil cooler kit...

I just buoght a CWC oil cooler kit off my friend. Does anyone who has this kit have any pointers to give out before it goes on my car?

I assume that the CWC is the same as the CWR. If not I apologize for this posting.

Pointers:

1) Do not over tighten the AN-10 adapters. They are aluminum and can break. I can not stress this enough.
2) I had to dismantle my AC condenser to get it to fit. I was able to put it back in after bending the front AC pipe.
3) Cover all oil lines in heater pipe insulation and high temperature aluminum tape (both of these can be found in the plumbing department of your local hardware store).
4) Give your self a lot of time to install this. This is a big undertaking and it took me a lot longer then 6 hours CWR said it would.
5) Make sure you have sizes 20 MM - 25 MM wrenches.
6) Run the oil inlet (oil filter) line under neith the AC condenser to the oil filter.
7) Good luck.

Let me know if you get stuck I can give you some advice on where to go next. I just installed mine last month along with a radiator upgrade.

Also look very closely at the installation instructions that come with the thermostat. There is an insert that updates it and it is different that the Crooked Willow instructions. I spent on full day (12 hrs est.) and an entire lazy second day to do this and put a racing radiator in. The radiator was a small part of the time but since I had everything out is was easy to do then.

Other things I had to do that the instructions didn't mention were as follows. I had to trim a little plastic on the under cover for one of the lines. Trim the plastic pieces under the coolers them selves. The lines come off the back of the stock cooler and the bottom of the kit coolers. I had to use zip ties from the thermostat to the intecooler support rail to keep it from rubbing on one of the radiator fan. I e-mialed Duwain about this and he said that it was normal.

Also about the heater hose. Always always cut the piece a lot longer than you think you might need. That will save a lot of hastle.

I didn't have any problems with he thermostat clearing the radiator fan's and I have a Koyo. My problem was with it clearing the AC. I mounted my thermostat directly under the AC compressor, not directly under the Intercooler bar. I also wasn't able to run the oil filter line under he AC/PS mounting plate where the oil hard pipe was located. I ran the line strait down and below the back of the AC compressor. This line connected to the thermostat with a strait connector, not a 90 degree connector. I ran the short oil line with the two 90 degree connectors from the drivers side oil cooler to the thermostat. This I found was not in the instructions.

thanks guys, great advice, I really appreciate it.

So how long has each of you had your kit and are you all happy with it? Anyone actually hook up a oil temperature guage to monitor the differences in oil temperatures? I can't wait to get mine on.

Also does anyone happen to have a pic of one installed on a car with an aftermarket front end?

I would make sure you have a temp gauge when you do the install so you can see if there are any problems. When I installed mine there was a spring that popped out sideways and was causing my thermostat to not open. I put it all together and the temps kept rising and the one hose out of the cooler never got hot, took it apart and found the spring off, worked great ever since. My temps used to rise to 220-230 sitting in traffic on a hot day, now they rarely go above 200 sitting and won't go over 180 cruising. Oh yeah, thats only with one cooler installed right now, I had problems mounting my other one so its sitting in the garage right now.

Agree with every suggestion above. I also mounted the thermostat under the intercooler support bar and zip-tied it to the bar. You might consider using sealant on the threads although it shouldn't be necessary. Be careful removing the power steering pulley(it's pretty fragile, I broke mine taking it off. It's a pretty big job, so don't underestimate the time required.

One additional recommendation would be to get a real AN wrench to tighten the fittings. They are aluminum so they won't mar the finish on the fitting. They are usually short so it makes it difficult to overtighten. They are also the exact size you need, as there is no exact fit in either metric or standard for AN sizes.

When running the lines make sure to put a piece of rubber between the two lines. I cut open half of a heater hose and used zip ties. This ensures that they do not rub. If they rub they will cut into each other.

Hi does anyone know what stock r1 dual oil coolers are worth used with all the lines? in very good condition?

you guys got me eyeing this awesome kit

and also crooked willow kit price minus what I could get for stock equals better price on crooked willow kit
