Wink Just got back from looking at a CYM to purchase a few questions...

hey everyone I've been away from this forum for a long time, basically ever since I sold my first FD. However I do login here sometimes to check out the current market of rx7s to see if I can pick one up. My current SN only reflects since I bought my first FD but I've been on this forum ever since I was 15-16. Now to the point, It broke my heart when I sold my first FD and I swore that one day I would own another one. Well that day is hopefully coming.

I just checked out a 93 CYM with 77K on the clock. owner claims its original engine and turbos, the car is mostly stock except for the fallowing.

HKS super dragger exhaust
Sprite R badges
RE Amemiya Badge on the rear under the stock badge.
RE Amemiya Red Shift ****(claimed by owner however I didn't see the RE logo)
yellow color matched stock wheels(they look as bad as they sound)
leather seats
missing the R1 strut tower brace

the owner is a older Asian fellow that as a real connection with the car and is really not liking the idea of selling it. He has had it for 6 years, three of which have been spent it this 3 sided barn with a tarp door thing. He parked the car after a shop told them that the turbos needed to be rebuilt. So the car has sat for three years until I show up to look at it and you can tell. cob webs and dust that settled through the car cover is caked on it. basically I consider this car at that moment a barn find and didn't expect it to run. To my amazment with a little jump and a few turn overs the little 1.3 started right up with very little smoke coming from the engine.

now to get to the problem and the basis of this thread. On a Non CYM car I would overlook some of these little things but since this is a collector color/car then I want to know how much do these problems effect the price of the car.

Problems
Missing the R1 strut tower bar(owner claims a shop that he took it to 3 years ago forgot to put it back on.)

the "R and X" of the RX7 badge on the back have been taken off and the sticker residue is till there.

the Sprite R badges are the sticker kind and I'm not fond of them being on the car.

the door sill VIN plate is there along with the vehicle weight sticker but another sticker was taken off(residue is still there), for the life of me I can't remember what that was on my old FD. maybe its nothing but I was kind of surprised by this.

interior
Is really near mint condition except the seats were changed out for black leather with a yellow insert. I was really bummed about this I was looking forward to r1 suede seat.

He said the center console bezel(the one that goes around the shifter) was scratched, so he bought a new one from mazda. Now I was under the impression that to center bezel was semi-gloss black on all rx7 models. This one was a flat black but it did look factory and not like it was painted.

it idled a little shaky but cleared up once we fully connected the battary which brings me to the turbos,

They didn't smoke on start up and they didn't smoke when I drove it however it is running rich. What seems to me to be the problem is the stock seq. vac lines have given up the ghost b/c the car pulls fine at half throttle until switch over point then it starts to fall apart. I didn't do any WOT pulls b/c of 3 year old gas sitting in the tank. however I did do the half throttle pull till about 7000 rpm in second gear.

driving impressions was it was a lot stiffer then my 94 touring but that maybe from the r1 suspension. It does have the rear end clunk, the 5 gear syncro is fine but did seem to have a little bit of trans noise that I don't remember my 94 having.

Paint, even being dirty the paint looked really good aside for a few blemishes here and there, the biggest being paint peel on the rear wing, and two rock scuffs on the front bumper. He claims its stock paint and I couldn't find a reason to doubt him, it still had the factory clear protectant that runs along side of the car.

Also it seems to have the JDM 99+ tails and he doesn't even know it, they could however be painted USDM ones. How can you tell? the tail lights have markings on them but I'm not sure if they are the JDM tails or not.

A/C blew cold, the stock twin oil coolers were there, all the gauges worked, all electronics worked,

Car looks a drives great and about how I expected for a car that has sat for 3 years.

What I'm looking for is opinions on the value of the car. and if its worth the money. he is looking for 15K I offered 14K. I really would like to pick up cecanbes CYM but there is a big difference spending 14K and spending 25K even though I know his car is completely mint without the problems I would have to deal with, with this one. Plus this local.

I'll go ahead and pull the pictures off my phone and upload them so you guys can see what I'm looking at. And sorry for any errors within this book of post.

Missing the strut tower bar isn't a big deal as you can get them in the parts for sale section pretty easily... the stickers and emblems aren't that big of a deal and you can always remove all those ugly stickers and buy new emblems from Mazda without too much trouble.

As for the seats, you can find stock R1/R2 seats pretty easily in the for sale section as well, or you could just buy new covers for those ugly yellow/black ones in the car. Same with the wheels, you could have them media blasted to remove that god awful yellow paint and get them back to stock, or you could just buy new ones.

The interior pieces were different between 93/94-95 models, the 93 had a matte black finish with no gloss while the 94-95 models had a semi-gloss kind of harder plastic look to them, that's probably the difference you're finding in the interior.

As for the sticker on the door jam, a lot of the FD's had recall repairs done on them and there was a sticker placed in the door jam next to the VIN sticker, this is probably what has gone missing from the car.

Car looks pretty complete, and if all it needs is new turbos, then that's not going to be a huge hassle. Even if you dont want to do the work yourself there are plenty of shops in FL that can do the job for you. Just hopefully it's not something more serious like bad coolant seals or oil control rings, which would require a rebuild.

For the condition the car is in, relatively reasonable miles, and the work you would need to do to get it back to mint condition, I think 14-15 is fair... or you could just buy mine

Thanks for your response cabaynes and sorry for me misspelling your sn earlier but i can't change it now. I agree, yours would be ideal but the price gap does give me a little wiggle room for other things. I plan on taking any FD I buy, CYM or not to the occasional track day and I would hate myself every track mile if I took your CYM out there. I'd feel like I'm destroying a work of art.

I know everything can be bought or fixed I just wanted a confirmation that the above prices were in the right area. I don't want to steal it from him but I'm also trying to get the best deal possible. Thanks again...

I picked up my CYM for 10.4k NZD (probably aroud 7k USD). same cond, probably better than this one. i wouldnt recommend paying the kind of money you are talking for it, but maybe that's just coz we're probably spoilt for choice with 7s here in NZ (check out www.trademe.co.nz). if i was in ur position id juat buy a white one and paint it CYM.

if u do decide to buy it, bargain hard, dont let him know it's rare or dont let on than you know it's rare

hey already knew it was rare. Also the FD market is totally different of here. since we only have three years of them without being able to legally import more our prices will always but far above yours. On the flip side its the reason FD's are so desired because you wont see more then three for four FD's on the road in one year. Unless of course you go to a seven meet.

Thumbs up

just woke up to an email received on my phone. He is willing to except my offer... I'll be picking it up on Saturday. Just in time for seven stock! I'm pretty stoked to pick up another FD after four years of waiting, and a CYM to boot.

^^ congratulations. And yeah to support cabaynes: what you were worried about was minimal.

You mentioned "just in time for seven stock" Does that mean you are bringing it?. If so I'd love to check it out in person.
