I got my FD a month and a half ago, with 80,000 miles on it. One previous owner, who had the turbos rebuilt and all of the belts replaced at 70k.

Yesterday I bought a 3yr/36,000 mile full warranty, figureing somewhere in the next 3 yrs the seals have to go out and blow the engine.

What do you think statistically?

Either way it is nice not to have to stare at the temp gauge in fear during every hard run!

How reliable are these 3 year / 36,000 warranties? Cant they just say the engine was overrevved or a misshift? Do these companies actually honor these warranty claims?

 

dont give it a month, it could go anytime, you never know. I bought my car with 69k on it and have 90k now and its still goin strong. That includes about 5 hours of road racing and 10 passes at the drags.

Most warranties don't cover overheating or blowing an apex seal.

 

why does people always think rotary engine just blows up all of a sudden, at a certain milage. You must be really stupid to blow an engine. They don't just blow up for no reason. If its heats up turn it off, don't over boost it, its that simple.

 

its not that simple. Well I agree that overheating is something that can usually be prevented, there are cars that are very well tuned with all the so called "reliability mods" that blow up at low mileage.

these are picky engines and just about all of us have had our engines replaced.

 

I bought the warranty from my work (car salesman) and the warranty cost are based on the car it is going on and how that car is genrally used.

The RX-7 gets the highest ranking of a level 5 car, meaning they basically are expecting you to beat the sh*t out of the car and drive it like it is meant to.

Warranty covers all seals (they actually have a seperate rotary engine coverage) including apex seals, driveline, all electronics, etc. everything except parts that wear like breaks and clutches etc.

 

Thats BS.. that totally defeats the purpose of the warranty... Those warranty companies are shady...

Two biggest problems with FDs engines blowing are overheating and blowing a coolant seal OR detonation and blowing an apex seal

 

The biggest problem you are going to have with these warranty people is is how long you are going to be in the shop. Ususally they want something to physically break and not just how signs its about to. Second, they drag their heels as much as possible so expect longer shop time. Personally, I didnt get it when it was offered to me. The rotary specialist in my area wasnt on the "approved" list and I would rather pay out of pocket for someone who knows what they are doing to work on my car.

When my intake manifold gasket went out, my car was making a nasty buzzing sound under boost. I took it to Mazda to get it checked out (before I knew that it was the IM gasket), and they said that if it is a gasket that wasn't covered under the warranty (like an exhaust gasket), I'd at least have to pay for the labor charges which was uninstalling pretty much everything but the engine (turbo, manifold...). I said screw this and brought it to my uncle. I turned out to be the LIM gasket as suspected (thanks to this forum) and I just paid him a couple hundred bucks.

A year before that, I had a problem with my clutch and brought it to the dealer. They 'inspected' it and said I needed a new clutch. I told them I had no previous slipping and it suddenly was hard to engage the clutch.
Again I brought it to my uncle, and it was the clutch fork that was busted. At first I was pissed since I could of had it covered under warranty...but then I realized that they probably would of just told me that while replacing the clutch, they found that the fork was broken too.

My experience w/ warranties...they'll scare you into not bringing them the labor unless the problem is obviously covered under the terms. BTW, my (extended) warrany was purchased from Cush Mazda by the previous owner. I wish that warrany wasn't there because my car just hit over 90K miles (purchased with 38K miles in 2000) with those two being the only problems with the car-and if I didn't have to worry about voiding the warranty, I would have spent my money on engine mods rather than on the exterior.

It is not BS. For example if you get your engine rebuilt by any of these tuners (Pineapple racing included) you are NOT covered for overheating or blowing an apex seal. Overheating is the drivers fault for not paying attention, if you run lean its a fuel issue, not an issue with the engine itself.

And yes you are right that is the two biggest problems, sucks.

 

They don't apply to modified engines anyway, Rich.

 

Rich is right, only un-modded and the only time they are available is at the purchase of the car (either when it was new or through a used car dealer). If you have the money to blow, sure why not, but if not, I wouldnt....I have heard from numerous people that they are more hassle than they are worth.

 

I bought my car a a dealership. Got my money's worth out of that warranty company

I betcha after my warranty ran out they probably stopped issuing them for rotaries
