just bought an FD today! but i have few Qs...

Sup guys,

I just got myself a silver FD with a rebuilt motor today, these are great cars pretty fast compared to my S2000...

But I may have quetions...

First, the car has 117,000K on the car but only like 30K on the motor. (stock, except for a magnaflow muffler)

My first question is, can redline MTF cure the grinding when I speed shift?

Second, whenever I step on the gas, my car makes a loud whinning noise...sounds funny, can there be a possible boost leak?

Third, the car starts fine, but most of the time it takes a tad longer to crank

Last, when I am flooring it, Lets say in 3rd gear, the car sometimes feels like it's jerking? Mot real jerky, but it kinda feels like it slowing down or something....but only for a split second.

Thanks! any help will be great.

get a boost gague- I prefer the steering column mount, a little expensive but worth the look. it will be your first tool in determining problems, also try not to mash the pedal, build boost gradually then you can floor it the rest of the way...

the jerk

Does the jerk thing happen at about 3k rpm? If so I hear that it is a common problem, my car does it some times, it seems to do it when the turbos aren't warmed up, but I am not sure what causes it. (just my $.02)

Welcome to the rotarty community!

The starting you describe sounds normal for a rotary. It doesn't fire up instantly like a piston engine. It cranks for a couple seconds, then fires.

At least mine does....

Boost gauge is a must!

Patrick

Get A boost Guage
The hesitation at wot may be the 12psi fuel cut boost limiter from the ecu.
hard starting can be caused by old plugs,&/or bad plug wires, or a weak Battery or bad Battery cables/terminals

That would be the turbos - which is a good thing As long as it sounds like a whistle/whine and not a dental drill grinding. Boost gauge will tell you if you are making full boost.

When you step on it in 3rd you will feal the transition between from single to double turbo mdoes, where the boost drops a bit then comes on even stronger. This happens at about 4500 rpm. You will also grow to like this - a lot

legendr35, you bought the one for $11k on autotrader? I was talking to the seller, to go see the car, but poof it's gone. Congratulations on the car.

on 3rd gear (when you are "slowing down for a split second") it could be the transition from the primary turbo to the secondary turbo.

About the starting, I think that's a pretty common occurence with these cars.

Go get your Boost gauge it'll help a lot.

Mine fires immediately. Turn the key and within a second the engine is running. Idle ain't great when it's colder... But that's probably because my motor's got 83k miles.

My RX starts about as quickly as my wifes 2002 (2 months old) Explorer SOHC V6. My 302 Mustang (1994) is the only car that takes a couple (2-3) seconds to crank over.

This is my second FD. My first also turned over immediately. I don't think it's normal for rotaries to crank without starting... Except maybe if they've been run really hot and shutdown without proper cooling...

There was a post about the starting (a hair bit slower) where a number of people had it. It was relatively recent, and a few of them said it was common. Since my FD is gone I have nothing to go by

The slow cranking can also be a sign of low compression. Even though your engine has only 30K miles on it, if it gets really bad have Mazda or a competent rotary mechanic do a compression test. Also here is link to a site which will help a great deal:
http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/index.html
And as other have said you must get a boost gauge to keep tabs on the car.

Hey Legend,

Congrats on getting your car. Redline shockproof (yellow fluid) MTF will help suppress the grinding if the syncros are not to far gone. The grinding won't totally go away but it helps the transition be a little smoother. Might as well change the diff while your changing the tranny fluid. One gallon of the stuff is enough to do both the diff and tranny. Good luck -- Tommy

Well, mine doesn't fire immediately, and I don't think I have low compression. My car was tested about 6 months ago, and it had above the limit compression.

It still fires fine, it just takes about 1-2 seconds. Most of the guys around here with RX7s report the same thing. It doesn't sit there and crank, and crank...it just takes a second to fire. I guess it is about the same as my SVT when I think about it...

Who knows.

Later,
Patrick

i highly doubt the sound ur hearing is ur turbo's =]. I've never heard an fd make that sort of noise before. I know what the turbo whine sounds like and what ur car makes surely isnt it. With 117,000 miles on the turbo's they cant be in the greatest condition. Like what everyone else said tho, only a boost gauge will be able to tell u whats going on. Have fun with ur car and get that redline in asap, it helped me out a lot. If u decide to get a compression check done, let me know, maybe we can get a group discount, hahahahahha! By the way, nice car, good choice.

ps - u better beat mark's type r by more than a car length next time or else i have lost all respect for rex's. =]
