Hi and welcome!

Do you have details on your car that you'd like to share with the class? It'll be hard for anyone to get a good feel of what you're up against given what you've posted so far.

Also, because this seems applicable to you, the stock differential is designed to be very very good for racing(track/auto-X), but it's not so great for hard launches at the drag strip. People have had their differentials grenade all over the line with barely more than stock power. They say diff braces help this, but it seems that even with the diff brace, you'd still have some issues.

68,000 on the original motor? Have you familiarized yourself with the maintnence schedule yet? Have you read the FAQ at the top of this section yet?

400hp is pretty crazy in this car. Most people aim to keep it around 350hp for streetability and reliability...and monetary...reasons.

Good information. First off, welcome! The FAQ's will be a BIG help in terms of getting started with useful information and where to start with reliability etc.

400hp is a lot in this car.

Best of luck!

YES, Im familiar with all that, Ive done all Dia. Compression ect Tests and all come out good, now My goal is for AROUND 400hp not saying its going to have to be on the Original motor, if it comes to that ill get a rebuild with a porting, BUT TILL THAN i want to have that hp range setup, NOW i dont need to know this COMMON SENSE stuff, im very well aware of engines and cars in general just wanted some HELPFULL hints and MODS for the 7. (I know all the history of the 13B, and know NOT what to do to blow it up and keep it happy)

Sorry for the long post.....

Alright, if you don't like what I've been saying...

To see 400whp, you'll need either BNR twins or a single turbo. You'll need a "standalone" ECM(probably a Power FC), an upgraded intercooler, a full fuel system(850cc primaries, 1600cc secondaries would be a nice start, plus fuel pump, FPR, rails), an upgraded radiator(fluidyne will be fine for the street, but if you plan to track the car, go for a Koyo), aluminum AST or AST delete, full turbo-back exhaust, a good engine builder(I could reffer you to some places I know are good, but none of them are in your area) and a good tuner.

That's all I can think of for now, maybe someone else can chime in with anything I may have forgotten...

You won't see 400hp on stock twins. You also won't see much, if anything, from porting the twins.

Porting the wastegate is a good idea, ecu upgrade(go with a standalone system, do not get a piggyback. Apexi PowerFC would be your best bet).

From what I've heard, the HKS Twin Power isn't very good at much. You don't want a turbo timer, it's fruitless to have a wideband attached all the time, it's just an expencive as **** O2 sensor. You definately don't want a Silicone AST get an aluminum one or have it deleted all together.

Make sure you have the wastegate ported and the PowerFC hooked up and ready to tune before you run an open exhaust.

The porting is more for safety more than performance, same thing for the TT, and wideband for tuning, as for the ast, i said silicon HOSES AND ast(aluminum ofcourse) As for the twins what the max hp i can get out of them and at what PSI?

turbo timers have been known to be harmful. Since the turbos are watercooled and not oil cooled, so the turbo timer will do little more than look cute and raise engine bay temps when you park.

I don't see how porting the turbos is a safety thing. Porting the wastegate is, but I've never heard of porting a turbo for safety.

The wideband will be great for tuning, but there's no reason to leave it on the car once it's tuned. Again, it'll look neat sitting there, and be a really expencive O2 sensor to beat on.

The stock twins peak efficiency is at 15PSI, meaning they won't last very long being pushed that hard. Guys on here in the Time Slips/Dyno Sheets section have been reporting generally around 350whp at that boost level, a lucky few have seen upwards of 375, but not many and probably not for more than a few months before the turbos **** the bed.

So, if after a hard run I turn off the car(common sense not too just an example) the turbo wouldnt help....

Well since i already am porting the WG i thought to port the turbos,

The wideband will keep me notified of the AFR and keep in check my rich/lean and thats something to keep an eye on with these engines.

Well i will have different mods for the ecu to run, like a stock 10-8-10psi map mode HOPEFULLY that, than the one for 15psi and the maps needed to run that when needed.

Nope, turbo timers don't help in this car. Turbo timers matter if you have purely oil-cooled turbos - FDs have water cooling, so the heat will dissipate fine even sitting still. If you make a hard run, there is no need to run the engine for more than a couple of minutes for the turbos' sake. Idling, engine temps tend to increase rather than drop, so IMO it's best to cruise lightly for a few minutes and then shut it off. In the case of autocross where you can't cruise around, just idle it for a couple of minutes. (In autocross you'll have plenty of time to water-spray your radiator anyway)

Regarding the goal of 400hp, you can get maybe 350hp out of the stock turbos. To get closer to 400 on sequentials you'll want BNR stage 3s. Single turbos will get you to 400+ no problem, but that's your decision.

As for the mods required: all reliability mods, fuel system, turbos, exhaust, intake, intercooler, radiator and ducting, clutch, porting is optional. The drivetrain usually benefits from some reinforcements (mounts, braces).

"Bump" means to reply to a thread to bump it to the top of the list for visibility. Don't bump a thread more than once a day, please. If after a couple of bumps it's not getting what you need let it go.

Dave

Pistonkilla - you're by far a breed far and few between, not every newb FD owner knows what to do and/or make plans for the car after doing the 60kmile tuneup.

listen to these guys that have replied to your next mods, the parts do help a lot out in the power dept.
and as far as the BNR stage 3's go.... excellent bang for buck mod, and much cheaper than getting new or "newish" '99 spec turbos

??? I have read the Twin Power is a great accessory with the stock ignition setup. People have noted smoother drive ability, better burn, and is helpful in misfiring with setups that produce 15psi or +

Someone please correct me if I am wrong I would like to know for sure.

I can also say congrats to the 2 who just got thier FDs. I actually just picked up my first about 3 weeks ago. Some poor bastard traded his 93 VR with only 55k miles for my 04 RX-8 which he is now going to try to sell for $18k (I didn't get a single bid on ebay for $14k). He was selling the FD for $17k and his goal was to turn around and sell the the 8 for more??? The car is near perfect! It came with a PowerFC, Apexi Intake, Apexi FMIC, the apparently pointless Apexi turbo timer, Apexi Catback, R1 front lip, some after market wing (car still doesn't fly)... and for some reason an S-AFC and AVC-R which i ripped out since they served no purpose with the PowerFC and did nothing but screw up my fuel maps. Here's some pics

nice find, now quick! rip off the wing, foglights, and lower it!

and to the OP, most of what you have planned out is great as far as power goes.. dont forget to upgrade injectors as well.. and with all this power while auto xing, have you given thought to suspension and brake setup?

LOL Exactly what im doing.....

Yes i just forgot to mention the suspension, im not sure of what exact brand for susp. and already got Brembo slotted, drilled rotars, EBC pads and braided lines.

As for the Inj, im not familiar with that for these engines so for my setup what will be good, 850cc prim. 1600cc Sen.??? and will i need to mod anything like fuelrails ect????

Thanks
