JDM Engine Swap

I've been looking into replacing my 93 rx7 motor & tranny with one that's been imported from Japan. I found two companies that has the cheapest prices and was wondering if anybody has heard of them? The two companies are nagasakijdmmotors.com and tigerjapanese.com. They are both based out of Canada.

Has anybody done a swap like this before? Just wondering what all I will have to modify to make this work? The swap comes with a complete motor, tranny, uncut wiring harness, and computer. Any info would be great.

Thanks

never heard of the one company but tiger i would avoid. I know a couple people how have gotten cars engines ect from them and alot of the good pricing comes from being not the best running part. you can check out japaneseimports.ca then generally do a good job at importing what you need. it costs a little more but I said i wanted a mint condition and they found a mint condition so a little extra is worth it

the best solution for any 13b swap , unless you know 100% that the engine is ok , is to tear down and rebuid , there is no way of knowing if the engine has a spun bearing or other problems, yes you can cheq seals and rotor condition throught the exhaust port ,chek for leaks between rions/housings etc , but a rebuild is highly , HIGHLY , recommended

No no no! Don't buy an engine from any Canadian importer, especially the two you mentioned. Nagasakijdmmotors.com is actually Osakajdmmotors.com and they have a horrible reputation. TigerJapanese.com is only slightly better, but I've still heard of a lot of people getting broken engines from them as well. When you buy a motor from another country, a lot of consumer protection laws go out the window, so it's a lot safer if you purchase it from someone here in the US. Post up a WTB thread in the For Sale section or get in touch with some of the vendors on the board here to see what they have.

One is your engine bad, or somthing. The 13btt FD engine is the same exact engine in America and Japan. I would suggest keeping your engine if there is nothing wrong with it because a JDM engine is the same thing. If your engine is blown just have it rebuilt because it will probably cost less in the long run. If you dont have an engine once again just buy an engine that is allready in the U.S. because the JDM and USDM engine's are the same.

well it depends on which gen FD you go with

the S6 engine is the same in the US and Japan, but the S7 and S8's are different

eitherway, i had a friend who dealt with Osakajdm and didnt have any issues at all but i dont know anything beyond that.

as a note, the JDM tranny has a different 5th gear than the USDM gear so, if you want to keep a "cruise" 5th gear, stick with the US tranny

The engines are pretty much the same with some small exceptions. There is no real point in swapping for the sake of swapping. This isn't a Honda or Subie...

If your engine is low on compression or blown, you may be better off having a budget rebuild done.

Forgive me for my ignorance in the JDM department but I dont think the wiring harnesses are the same either at the ECU connection but I could be wrong. PM me if you want details about a fresh rebuilt engine or longblock.

I have two reasons for wanting to get a JDM import. I have a coolant seal leaking in the current motor. I know this, I cut it when I did the rebuild 20k ago. I was in a time crunch and couldn't wait for a new seal to come in. But hey, I got 20k out of my first rebuild. Not bad considering I only got 12k out of a rebuild from Atkins Rotary.

The other reason is I plan to sell my rx7. I know I'll never get all my money out of the car that I've sunk into it. I hope to sell the car as mostly stock and then part out my upgrades like the Apexi RX6 turbo kit, Power FC, Commander, Datalogit, tranny, maybe rebuild the motor sometime and sell it.

It's starting to sound like the JDM Import may be a problem in the making.

You can get a JDM block and just use all your components. That will work. However, you could also have Kevin at RotaryResurrection rebuild your motor.

If you are just trying to sell it, getting a JDM motor and swapping components may not be a bad deal. Contact "Japan2LA" here on the forum.

A cut coolant seal, take the engine appart and replace it. Replacing a coolant seal would be cheeper than a JDM motor. A coolant seal does NOT mean a blown motor. I have a small coolant seal leak and my car still runs like it always has(you just have to watch the coolant level).

Oh that's right, some of the newer engines have a 16 bit ecu as compared to our 8 bit.

The only thing that is different on 93-95 13b rew is harness routing.

OP listen to the guy who said be picky with what condition you want the engine in.
Don't deal with canadian importers

And? All he'd have to do is lengthen the harness, which isn't really that much of a big deal. Getting a '96+ engine might be a little bit more of a pain as all of that is 16bit, so he'd have to order JDM engine management if he wanted to go that route. I guess that wouldn't really matter though since he said he's wanting it basically stock, so as long as it came with an ecu, it'd be fine.

In either case, he definitely shouldn't order the engine from out of country unless it's through one of the vendors on this board.

Actually there is one small detail I forgot to mention, no smog stuff.

I bought my engine that Im useing right now from them the engine was in pretty good shape. The turbo actuators where a little roughed up but i had spares, and it didnt come with the ecu like the website said but I didnt care as I still had mine. Other than that the engine still runs great.
