after seeing the coolant temp remain at 115degree C while climbing through some twisties i decided to install an thermoswitch from a 89 FC and it works a charm. thanks Dale!

I also just completed this mod today...and in the process had an intersting find...
the FD thermoswitch was not even connected!
that's right, the connector was just dangling back there in no man's land! this would explain why my fans didn't come on as often as i would have liked!
anyone have any tips for "feeling" proper belt tension. i see factory spec is .24 - .27 inches, but i am without a tool to test tension. i've pushed on the center of the belt and it seems to have about a 1/4" of play, but that seems highly dependant on the amount of force you apply.
anyone know the "standard" amount of force to check the play?
By the way, thanks for the great info on a fabulous reliability mod.

oh yes and a silly question, but when this switch was disconnected (prior to me doing the mod) what was responsible for keeping my car cool. I never had an overheat or any other issue...

but the one I pulled not look the same as the new one.
The number on the old 15/12F/97M (also is scuffed Connectors, which is not my work )
and the new one (PN 41-18-840) is wearing 9N/19/97M
It seems that the previous owner doing this before me? ... but the connector looks weird.
Now the new is installed and it works, but still... anyone know that original switch?
