Issue

My 93 Rx7 is smoking really bad at start up (thought it was normal for a rotary) but it smells so rich and kind of sweet. It sounds like it is skipping just a little(the coolant buzzer also goes off when its cold) and when its warmed up(buzzer goes off) it skips and blows some smoke for a few seconds then stops and doesn't really smoke. Then about a minute later it blows alot of smoke for a few seconds then quits again.

i'm thinking spark plugs but the rich smell ehh not to sure. The motor has 1000 miles on it(reman from mazda). Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

If the smoke is sweet, I think that indicate a coolant seal leak.

As far a the coolant buzzer, that happened to me when my coolant was just slightly low. When I topped it of, it didnt happen again.

These problems are probably related unfortunately. If what Im saying is right, thats pretty serious. I'll wait for someone more experienced to chime in for a solution.

I've not experienced any engines, personally, that need rebuilds. However the sweet smell (coolant) coupled with the smoke and coolant light/buzzer going off would make me think you have blown a coolant seal.

Have your coolant system pressure tested to be sure... Is there any smoking from the engine bay? Or is there only smoke from the exhaust (some is normal, due to the cold weather, but an overly larger amount really isn't)...

The sweet smell could be something as simple as one of the various coolant hoses on the engine being loose, or having a slight split (if smoke/smell is in the bay) or as serious as coolant seal failure, requiring a rebuild.

I'd suggest taking your car to Banzai Racing. It's about a 4 hour drive but they can/will take care of you, and they really know their stuff!

Well if the smoke smells sweet and the coolant buzzer comes on that usually means a blown coolant seal. However, with 1k miles on the rebuild it could be that the coolant was never properly burped all the way and there is still air in the system. Top off the coolant the next couple times before you drive the car. After 3-4 more times of doing this, if the buzzer still comes on it is likely you have a blown coolant seal. The smoke from teh exhaust could be several things, it is usually the turbos or coolant seal that cause this though.

Good luck

Thanks for all the input. Hopefully i'll figure it out. I really don't think its a blown seal because of the rebuild, i will try topping it off everytime i drive. And update you guys on what happends next. The buzzer does turn off when warm and whenever you jerk it while driving it will buzz for a few seconds then turns off again.

oh and no smoke from the engine bay, just from the exhaust.
