This is why the first thing I did when I got my FD was to remove the spare wheel permanently and then POR-15 and HEAVILY coat (I mean 1/4" thick) rubber mastic spray the inside of the spare wheel well and then top over that with a good solid coat of spray on body wax.

Any water that gets in the wheel well will never ever, ever sit on steel and rust, as its basically a 1/4" thick rubber lined bucket.

My spare wheel well was perfect when I got the car, but I wanted to keep it that way. Seen too much of this stuff happening from bad seals, drains and glass in the FDs...
