Decided to take the plunge and work on the interior trim this weekend. I'm going with some paint advice on a thread by Black R1. I used ELO (Easy Lift Off) to take off the old peeling surface. It took a couple of applications but was really pretty easy. Then I used Tamiya T-38 Gunmetal spray paint. It dries fast and hard. I'm waiting for the last piece of the driver's door trim to dry before I put it back together. But for now, here's the storage bin door in place to give you an idea of the before and after.

The pic quality wasn't the best, but it looked nice from what I could see. Make sure you put up more pics when you are done.

 

I'd be interested in seeing this done on 94+ interior..seeing that they have a rougher finish...what woud it look like..or what you have to sand them down first ???

 

Don't forget to put some kind of enamel/clear coat on your interior panels after you're done painting them! It'll help protect the finish

I forgot to repost, but mine started to fade on the armrest after 3 months/4000 miles since i did not use a clearcoat.

Did you ever find a good clearcoat to use? What do you recommend.

 

im taking mine to a body shop and they'll clearcoat all my pieces for 65 bucks

by using car clearcoat, the interior pieces will probably outlast the car

 

My concern about car clearcoat is that is seems to scratch so easily from anything that brushes against it. At least my 93 MB does. But you're right, using a professional clear coat will seal it and make it shine.

 

Mine will get done sometime this winter, and what I am worried about with the clear coat is the amount of shine. I am not sure how shiney everyone's is, but I really don't want it too shiney. Nothing else in the interior is incredibly shiney, and I while the silver will make it stick out, I don't want it to stick out that much. Also a little concerned of sun glare if the pieces are too shiney. Does anyone have a way of not clear coating but still have a good finish or know of a duller clear coat?

 

Given that you leave the big hub black and paint just the outer trim of the gauge panel... there should not be that much glare. I believe there are some kinds of clear primers that will dull up the finish if it's too shiny for your tastes.

Wouldn't just Satin clear cloat spray enamel work? I use it to seal camo paint without leaving a shine.
