Interesting observaton regarding coolant level.

Hey guys, I have just observed something really interesting about jacking up my Fd, it temporarily messes with the coolant level reading. I mean even after lowering and running the car and allowing it to rest overnight. Mine will always register higher levels. After two or three days of using the car and allowing it to heat cycle each time the level will return to where it was before jacking up the car.
Over the years I have often had varying coolant levels and only recently realized that it was always just after the car had been jacked up for some reason.

Has anyone experienced varying coolant levels? This may be the cause.

Are you talking about the overflow? There is no coolant level reading.

remember how the system works ,

When system reaches a certain temp the pressure rises in the system , and pushes the thermostat cap open and then water will either overflow into the overflow tank , or return into the engine as needed , but as pressure gets reduced when the motor cools the thermostat cap closes so if it closes before all the water goes back into the engine then you have more in the overflow . thats all it is .

The way I do it is with a COLD engine I make sure the motor is topped up and fill the overflow to half. If the overflow is more then half, leave it alone, it will spit out whatever it doesn't need.

Yes, I know exactly how the coolant system works. I make it a habit check the overflow dipsick while the engine is dead cold before I start it each day. All I am saying (with my car) if I were to jack it up to change oil, or clean, or whatever, the cold coolant level, when checked the next time, will always be higher (about 2-3 notches) for days to come even after using the car and allowing complete heat cycles. I must say that the level always remains in the safe zone however. It will then return to is original 'cold level" when cold afterwards, perhaps three days of regular use.

Please note that there are no bad effects from this. I keep a very close eye on my coolant levels for reasons known to all rotary engine owners and this was an observation I made.
Perhaps the temporary un-level state of the vehicle causes a change of the fluid distribution in the cooling system.

Do you clean the stick before checking? Coolant really shouldn't move to the overflow by doing that as I don't think your generating 0.9 bar of pressure doing that.
