Interest in knowing how many FD's are registered??

In trying to find out where to find this number that we all speculate on, I found no luck at the DMV, USDOT, or Highway Patrol. However when I called the USDOT they referred me to a company called R.L Polk & Co., which is a large automotive statistics company.

http://usa.polk.com/Company/WhoWeAre/

In talking with an account executive there, she told me that they could retrieve this data and have a state-by-state list of the number of 93-95 RX-7's still registered. She quoted me the minimum amount for a data request which was $500.

Question is, is it worth it for a sizeable number of people to chip in a few dollars each?

If enough of you think its worth a few dollars to know the total number, as well as numbers by state, we can start a paypal donation system until the $500 mark is reached. Then I'll send the money so they can start retrieving the data and it will be posted on this forum, along with scanned copies of the report they send me and a receipt.

I've registered there, but I'm talking about an an accurate list by state of the total number registered in the U.S. fd3s.cc is just a site where you manually add your car to the registry.

BTW, is that site down?

How about contacting Barrett-Jackson first. They usually try to run numbers down like that before they let cars be auctioned off at their auctions. And since 3 FDs sold at the last one myabe they know or could put you in the right direction. Then again maybe they don't....just a thought.

Did they tell you it would cost $500 to provide a list of every state or did they just say that was a minimum price for any request? Please clarify if they agreed to do it for $500.

In talking with her on the phone she told me that the minimum cost for a data request was $500. When giving me her opinion on it over the phone she said that she didnt think it would be more than $1000 but somewhere in the $500-1000 range. I told her that the only parameters that would need to be met were 93-95 RX-7's, and by state. I asked if they could do it by color also but she said they couldnt.

I talked to her yesterday and this is the email I got today...

Matthew,
The cost to receive statistical data showing the number of Mazda RX 7's MY 93-95 by state is $500.00.

Please advise how you'd like to proceed.

Matt, do you know what information they can provide you w/? B/c a LOT of info is public information like names, addresses, VINs, etc. Not that I want ALL that info, but it would be helpful to know that "oh hey, there are 12 FDs in my immediate area...I gotta hunt 'em out" than "You have 17 FDs in this state" ya know?

I asked her how they retrieve the info and she says they get it from the state, so I'm not sure if they can localize it. They might be able to but that would probably have to fall under a separate data request if you wanted it for your own interests.

BTW: I just got a second email after asking about the accuracy of the data or whether it was based on estimates, and how long it would take...

"This is real data based on registrations. Turnaround to provide the data is just a matter of days once the agreement and prepayment are provided"

I'd appreciate it if you could just email 'em asking 'em what info it includes, as the State is the one that provides all the extra info too...it's public info. The info ALL comes from the DMV.

Thanks

Actually that's incorrect:

http://extratv.warnerbros.com/cmp/sp...999/07_16c.htm

"Another important change since Rebecca's murder is that home addresses are now confidential. Although you can't get them from the DMV, but Saunders says it's not enough. "For one thing, we need stronger sentences because stalkers never stop." "

Well at least in California it is not public info.

This is the sort of question that rotary-specific shops and vendors would be interested in. It's possible that places like Rotary Extreme, Racing Beat, Gotham Racing, A-Spec Tuning, RX7Store, etc... would be willing to contribute to this cause. If you're lucky, you might even find someone who's already paid for the info and is willing to share.

Personally, I'd put $10 into the pot.

I doubt we are going to get a list of names and address for all FD owners for $500.

I doubt it will even be broken down by ZIP code for that price.

I've read on this board that Pettit paid for a state-by-state survey survey in 2003 and got a total of 5000 or so cars.

My prediction here if the survey goes ahead: 3143 cars.

Correct. There wont be any information other than the total number per state for each year.

montego, sorry, I'm not up to date on the latest changes in stalker info LOL. I just know that (at least until recently), name, address, year, make, model, and a host of other info were public information you could pay for at the DMV. Used to be like $5 a pop, but now it's up to $20 I think at the local DMV. And I only know that b/c back when Jon (Jsplit) and I were trying to gather interest in the FD Registry, we looked into this... It was gonna be prohibitively expensive pursuing it that route.

Moconnor, if it's simply them pulling info off a database using search criterion, I would easily believe it's for $500, cuz it'll cost them about $25

Scotty, I didn't even think about that, but wow...good idea. What a great way to harrass FD owners and send out fliers and advertising info to 'em haha

It probably costs them $0 to run the queries because I am sure they are pre-canned already by that company. However, I'll bet every DMV has a different database system. Mapping these to a single database so that this type of query can be executed is the value provided by this company. This is their intellectual property and $500 to get information from it seems reasonable.

If I recall, a few months ago someone asked their local DMV for the total FDs in their state and were quoted $500 or more to generate the custom query for just that state. Just because something is public, does not mean that it is free or easy to get at.

I disagree w/ you on this, b/c when you're talking about one single state, it's ONLY a matter of money. I can walk into my local DMV and in SECONDS, they can generate a list of every FD in the state for me. It's as simple as a search by a few letters of the VIN, or make and model etc. But, b/c it's the DMV, and they wanna make money, it's $20 or so PER RESULT.

But I do agree w/ you that each state has it's own DMV/MVA/DOT, and thus the service this company provides is being able to deal w/ ALL of them.
