Intake port question

Hi Guys,

I recently put a new motor in and I was curious about this intake port shown in the attached picture.

1) What is its function and why doesn't the front iron have one?
2) Why does the original paper gasket have a hole for it but the new metal gaskets have that port covered?

Thanks,

Matt

1) It is an emissions thing. EGR or exhaust port air injection; I don't know which.
2) Flip the gasket around. I find it very hard to believe that Mazda covered that port intentionally.

They covered it up. Here's a link to a picture of the new metal gasket.
