Insurance company disallows "rotary engine"

I am shopping for insurance and ran across this no frills operation that is fairly strict on the cars and drivers they will insure (they are inexpensive). One of the things that they are especially strict about are modifications; particularly performance modifications.
She reads through a number of these things… and one of the items on the list is "rotary engine".

LOL!!!!

I respond "uh, mine is an RX-7… it came from the factory with a rotary engine". She pauses and says "oh, it says here that it's ok in the older RX-7's, but nothing else".

Evidently the motors are used frequently enough as transplants to be on an insurance watch list!

You could always argue that the FD is an "older" RX-7 since it hasn't been imported since 1995 and that the majority of them are hitting the decade age mark this year and next.

Mercury even wanted to sell me a rider for all my performance parts so that if I wreck again, I get all the money I spent on mods back...

You know, that's actually a really good thing to have, in case of theft.

DC,

I use Mercury too, can you give me any more information about the rider?

Deductible and overall cost?

LOL! Mercury was the insurance company I called!!!!

Unless they have different policy's for Florida, or became more risk-averse regarding their stance on performance modifications, you will want to check up on your coverage.

They told me that they write riders for aftermarket add-ons such as rims, stereos and body kits but nothing performance-oriented. Like I mentioned, they refuse to cover a vehicle that has anything done to it (even a cold-air intake) to increase the vehicle's performance.

They indicated to me that a vehicle in violation of those terms was not eligible for coverage in the event of an accident.
Cordially,
John
