Installing some 99-spec turbos, have some gasket/small parts questions
Hey guys,
I’m planning to install some 99-spec turbos soon that have been gathering dust in my garage, and I am making up a list of necessary parts to do this install. Seems like everything is available with the exception of the downpipe to manifold gasket, N3A1-13-491, which shows discontinued. Question is, can this gasket be generally reused since a new one seems to be out of the picture? I guess the same question applies for the turbo to manifold gaskets, N3A1-13-710 and N3A2-13-710; both are still available but a set of these is almost $150 so if they can be reliably used again that would be a better way to go. But I don’t want to get everything installed and wind up with a gasket leak so if new gaskets are needed then I’ll buy them. Except for the DP gasket of course.
I have never done this job before, so no practical experience with reusing gaskets, hoping to get some advise from the pros.
Also, if there is a list of required parts for this job by part number and quantity somewhere that would be excellent. I think I have all the p/n but the parts book seems like it is coming up short on the number of required nuts to attach the turbos to the manifold (not planning to remove the manifold if it can be helped)
Thanks!

all the gaskets are metal, if they are in good physical condition when removed then they can be reused with no problem. the downpipe gasket is very robust and multi layer, its not something that would typically need replacing unless its mangled or something. doing this job with the engine still in the car is a pain, it can be done with some patience but its a pain. youll need A LOT of pb blaster or liquid wrench to get all the old stuff free. just be ready to drill out some studs. i would suggest having a torch or something handy to use just in case something looks like it will snap. as far as replacing things goes, you will want all new studs and nuts and vacuum line. when reinstalling everything, make sure you use COPPER anti seize.
if you go through a dealership parts website, it should list the quantities needed for each item. its a little easier to read than the parts manual.
93-99 Rx7 Exhaust Nut (9YB1-01-001)
93-95 Rx7 Exhaust Manifold to Turbo Stud (N391-13-456)
95 Rx7 Large Exhaust Manifold to Turbo Stud (9YA9-21-003)

Yep, the metal gaskets can be re-used 90% of the time. They are STUPID expensive new. If you really need one I'd try and track down a good used one.
What I would get for a turbo swap -
- New oil drain gaskets. There are 4 total. They're not too pricey.
- New Y-pipe and intake gaskets, they're all the same. 2-bolt metal flange gaskets. Some of the early cars had paper gaskets that are crap. If you have metal gaskets and know they're in good shape just re-use them.
- Copper lock nuts. The Mazda nuts are WAY too aggressive on the studs and almost always pull the stud out. They're total overkill. The copper lock nuts are the way to go, I've used them for YEARS, they hold tight but will actually come out when you want them to -
Nuts, Copper Plated Steel
- New studs to replace the ones that come out. You can get Mazda studs or aftermarket. There's a thread identifying all the stud sizes and lengths out there, I think Theorie wrote it.
- New water hoses, there are 2. Get them from Mazda, they're cheap. Don't use anything but stock hoses there.
A lot of things depends on how baked and old some of the things around the turbos are. You may want to plan a weekend to pull the old turbos and go over everything, then order parts, then install the following weekend. Might need to replace the 3/4" or so hoses that go to the stock BOV and CRV, I have a thread on silicone replacements that work great.
