Installing an Aftermarket Steering Wheel

I have searched in the FAQ's, through www.fd3s.net and this forum and it seems that all the threads are very old and lacking pictures.

After reading I thought that this would be the easiest installation of my life, how wrong was I...

-First I disconnected the battery.
-Then I unscrewed the 3 screws that hold toghether the plastic cover behind the steering wheel.
-Removed the 3 rubber hole covers on the back of the OEM steering wheel
-Unbolted the 3*10mm bolts holding the airbag onto the steering wheel.
-Removed the airbag from the steering wheel. I have a touring so there is a small white connector on the bottom right hand side of the steering wheel. I used a small flat head screwdriver to push in the clip and unclipped that. Then I disconnected the connectors of the left hand side of the steering wheel much like the ABS connector (it has the same design).
-Next I used my impact of the lowest setting to remove the 21mm nut holding the steering wheel onto the steering shaft.
-I replaced the nut by hand until it was flush with the thread, then following the FSM directives DID NOT hit the steering column in any way shape or form.
-I used a non-marring rubber hammer and lightly tapped around the outermost edge of the inside-side of the steering wheel until the pressure was released (pop!). Then unscrewed the handplaced 21mm nut and voila the stock steering wheel was off.

Now is where I am at. How do I remove the clockspring?

I had read in old threads that the best for the job was the Mazdaspeed hub which I see now is no longer in existence, but according to the descriptions it would seem that it was exactly like my second link. Also, I had heard good things about a "Finish Line Performance Hub for Miata" but I cannot find this anywhere anymore either.

Any contribution would be nice.

y u get that hub? (momo hub)

i got the one that for the miata. ( very easy to install ) and i got it from this website

however, i cant find it.. ( but i think the one that for 1990 to 97 will fit )

and post up the pix.. where u are stuck at! i might be able to help

Ive taken off many clock springs but never a Rx7, usally there is a yellow plug and a couple of clips that are hidden that hold it in you need a couple small screw drivers, BE JENTILE if you want to save it. if it cracks open and unralves then your done son.

IIRC the clock spring is removed by 3-4 little screws, then it comes right off.
with the momo hub i have, u cannot reuse the clock spring, i wired the horn directly to the plug under the dash, relocated the cruise controls and ran a resistor in the airbag plug, the wire for the horn does wrapped inside the wheel while steering but it causes no harm to anything.

Ben,

My Momo hub did the same so I just paid for one that puts the wires from the clockspring through the hub, easy easy.
