Installed AST, no leaks, still the gurgling; why?
Installed AST, no leaks, still the gurgling; why?
I just installed a new aluminum AST, changed the hoses that go to it, and had the system pressure tested up to 20 psi, and there were no signs of leaks. But, for some damn reason, I can still hear gurgling noises, or what sounds like water rushing through the heater core. Its much much better as compared to before I installed the AST and hoses, as there is much less noise, and there is no more puking up coolant from the overflow tank. Does this mean I still need to keep burping the system? My mech did the burping for me, and said that it should be fine, and doesnt seem to hear the noise. I admit, the noise isn't entirely audible unless all the windows are up, and teh sunroof is completely closed.

You have air pockets in the system. Keep on bleeding the system. You can use the throttle body hose for air bleeding the system.

But last time I tried putting coolant in both the filler neck, and AST, it would just boil right over out of the tank, from getting displaced by air. Now, from cool down after shut off, I hear what sounds like coolant being pulled from the overflow tank, which is a good thing. Should I keep adding coolant to the system? I have tried this burping a bunch of times, and it hasnt seemed to help. However, I havent tried since I got my new AST and hoses, so who knows. And like I was saying, it hasn't boiled over at all... yet, and thank God for that. OH, and another thing that really worried me, is after comming home, I stopped at the grocery store and shut the car off. about 15 mins later, I came back to the car, and clicked the keys to ACC. The temp gauge just started rising right up, and the add coolant buzzer came on, along with the overheat exhaust light on the shift panel. However, once I started it, the temp went right back down, and the buzzer shut off, along with the overheat exhaust light. What could be causing this? And another ques about turning the keys to 2 clicks, (ACC) while I'm on it, are the coolant light, oil light and exhaust overheat lights, along with the other lights all supposed to be on? I'm assuming they are.
the system will continue to gurgle, this a very common scenario in the FD. The system is bleeding the air out of the system and it is moving it's way thru the system. You will never get 100percent of the air out of the system, the gurgling is very normal and will continue when you shut the car down. The only way I ever got mine to stop gurgling was to change the coolant system over to Evans coolant. Since it doesn't get pressurized, the system doesn't get much air in it and as the coolant cools it isn't reducing pressure like the typical coolant system. As long as the car isn't overheating the system is working.
As for your lights coming on, when you turn the key to ACC the light panels will come on, this is a feature most or all cars have for you to see if all the indicator lights are operating. That's normal.

MOST gurgling is caused by coolant boiling in the turbos after shutdown. Three ways to control it. A cooling fluid with less than 50% antifreeze so as to conduct the heat away faster, add a bottle of RedLine Water Wetter, use a higher pressure rad cap such as the orig the car came out with in 1992. I use all three in Houston and never have any gurgling anymore.

so where should I dump the bottle of watter wetter in? I used it before, but had problems with the AST, so my mech drained it all out and replaced it with new coolant. Since Im assuming my system is full, what should I do? Just add it to the overflow tank and eventually it will get pushed into the system? Thx for the help, glad to know that some gurgling is okay. However, its still strange that my coolant light just turned on and then shut off. Does anyone know why that could be happening? Bad gauge maybe? I installed a new thermostat, and was wondering if that thermostat had something to do with the car making those noises. I used the new gasket and tightened it down plenty.

Man this bubbling coolant thing is popular these days I hate to think what will happen when summer comes
I found the easiest way to burp the system is to remove the coolant top each night before bed top it off in the morning until coolant level stays put at the top of the filler once this accurs your system should be bubble free.
Water wetter is good stuff but pricey if your not road racing or stretching the cooling envelope then there is really no need for it.
