Question Inercooler to get now, if going single later?

After searching I couldn't quite come up with an answer. So I'm putting it to the experts. I want/need to upgrade my intercooler, but I will probably go single later down the road. So which IC would be best to get now so when I do go single I don't have to get another IC? With the stock turbos I will want to turn the boost up to at most 15psi, with a single +/- 20psi. I know I have to get an EMS and larger injectors etc, etc. Any thoughts?

RE's v-mount is nice but a little too rich for my blood. It would work but I just don't think it's right for me. Apreciate the reply though. I think I want a FMIC but if there is a SMIC that could serve both purposes that may be the best way to go. I don't plan on going to the track often, maybe once in a while.

The Greddy 2 row can accomidate piping for both Single and Twin applications. I think that most of the SMIC applications are custom... UNLESS the location of the piping is the same as stock.. I *Think* the Apexi R6 kit has piping that goes to the stock IC location.....

there are two different apexi intercooler kits...one is setup for twins and one is for single. i am not 100% postive as to why but i think the passenger side end tank is angled a different way.

If you want a v-mount, the new HKS v-mount is advertised as being good for up to 700hp

advertised as being set for a to4(z?) setup too, I believe

not sure what the sequential setup will be like (afaik, hasn't been released yet)

I believe that Max Cooper is running 15 psi on an Apexi RX-6 turbo (almost 400 rwhp) with the M2 medium. Check out his website: www.maxcooper.com

One could argue that the intercooler has higher cooling demands running 15 psi on the stock twins than with a single running 15 psi...so I don't think you need a huge IC for a single turbo....

I do like how you can use the M2 intercooler for both applications. Thanks rynberg for pointing that out. By any chance, does anybody know the max psi the M2 med IC can handle?

You will need to upgrade from your stock airbox when you get the larger IC. Just an FYI if you didn't know this already...

I went with a pettit cool charge 3 for this same purpose. It's one of the biggest intercoolers out there. The flow is massive...it feels like I have j spec turbos now. Spool up is really fast.

I wanted the biggest intercooler available for my soon to be single but I was told that even the cool charge 2 is plenty for most singles

FWIW You almost have to use the pettit intake with this thing. There are major fit issues with a koyo radiator and a smog pump but nothing a roto zip cant handle...I'll be doing a write up once I get some new pipes from pettit. gl

Either the medium or large ASP/formerly M2/formerly ASP intercoolers will be more than up to the task and don't require ripping the front end of the car off or destroying the bumper assembly etc. overheating etc.

The whole front mount vs. stock mount debate from everything I've seen is a lot of kids with ego issues thinking a front mount rock catcher is more impressive, especially if they paint some Toilet Spec logo on it. : ) (sarcasm off)

When it really comes down to the actual applications the numbers don't support most of the hype about front mounts. 95% (randomly selected percentage) of the people I see with ported motors, singles turbos, Randomspec front mount intercoolers are nowhere near the quarter mile times I ran 7 years ago on a stock motor, ported non sequential stock turbos and my large IC. Yes driving ability is part of it but MPH in the quarter is usually a good indicator of actual power output independent of driver and I don't see most of them pulling 125+mph.

I'm not going to start a point by point list of problems with front mounts or any other variant. Suffice it to say unless you really think you're going to be running 9's in the quarter mile either of the stock mount ASP's will provide as good or better results than any front mount.

Base your decision on ease of use/installation, how it fits with everything else you plan to do and so on.

If you really think it's important for other people to be able to see your intercooler outside the car and installation issues aren't a big to you then a front mount might be the right route.

I heard the Cool Charge III has some design issues, likes it's not theirs : P.

Obviously I'm not entirely unbiased in this but, I am making an effort to be very honest about it.

Kevin is ASP who makes the kick *** Large SMIC. I have one and I love it. Drops temps like a rock.

~ Installation on a FMIC is a lot more involved compared to the hour it takes to drpo in an SMIC.

FMIC look nice when new, but look like crap after awhile. (Ever look at your oil coolers) People have put down over 600 rwhp on SMIC, so that's not a concern. I do like my large ASP IC with FTL duct, and if I ever switch to single I'll stick with it, just need to fab up some pipiing.

"How much is the HKS V-Mount compared to the RE one "

well I can only offer you the japanese prices - the RE unit is around 300,000 yen, the HKS unit is around 250,000 yen. However, I'm pretty sure the HKS can handle more hp. Also, I *think* the RE unit comes with radiator too. Haven't researched either fully yet, as my mod list won't get that far until sometime next year.
