importing a JDM rx7

first off, i have an FD i love, and am not looking to get another, but i was reading another thread about importing it and started to click on and follow up on all the links for my own personal knowledge. anyway i kinda had a question,

when the nhtsa says this " "VSA" eligibility numbers are assigned to all vehicles that are decided to be eligible for importation on the initiative of the Administrator." who, or what is the administrator?

also, for later model fd's could they be classifed as " "VSP" eligibility numbers are assigned to vehicles that are decided to be eligible under 49 U.S.C. § 30141(a)(1)(A), based on a petition from a manufacturer or registered importer which establishes that a substantially similar U.S.-certified vehicle exists." i was thinking that later rx7's would qualify under this because they have everything the 92-95's did but more..... (i already answered this below)

i found this stuff from this link below.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...LIG071404.html

here is some other cool info i have found as well,

this link, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/trd then enter the rx7 simple search docket number, 5863. you can then open the PDF document, and you can see that under bullet 4 it gives you the eligibility number to import an rx7. however its kind of wierd, because it lists non conforming cars as 87-95, anf conforming cars from 94-97... which of course we didn't have 96 or 97 cars here. i dunno, maybe mazda said it was the same up til 97?

i might call this guy tommorow, if he even still works there, and ask some questions.

here is his info:
george entwistle
office of vehicle safety compliance, NHTSA
202-366-5306

however, there is yet another paragraph which says "Vehicles that have been determined eligible for importation are assigned a vehicle eligibility number. All eligibility numbers are for left-hand drive motor vehicles except where right-hand drive (RHD) is identified after the model. While there is no specific restriction on importing a right-hand drive vehicle, these may not be imported under eligibility decisions based on the existence of substantially similar U.S.- certified left-hand drive vehicles. Our experience has shown that the safety performance of right-hand drive vehicles is not necessarily the same as that of apparently similar left-hand drive vehicles offered for sale in this country. However, we will consider the vehicles "substantially similar" if the manufacturer advises us that the right-hand drive vehicle would perform the same as the U.S.-certified left-hand drive vehicle in dynamic crash tests. Absent such a showing, the RI would have to demonstrate (through a petition) that the vehicle, when modified, would comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards, including those for which dynamic crash testing is prescribed." however the rx7 eligibility number does not have "RHD" next to it

so i guess we can import cars from from countries that have LHD rx7s....... maybe FD's are cheaper over there? good way to save some money... though with all the people on this board, i don't see why they guys at Mazda USA wouldn't give up crash test results on jdm rx7's so we could compare with the tests in 93. actually all Mazda would have to do would be to "advise" the NHTSA that it would crash the same... unless it won't... then there is no point.

re-reading the whole post, i think i already kind of answered my question, but i'm gonna post this anyway because i think there is some good information in here, for others to find when they ask if they can import an rx7. i'm gonna give mazda a call for fun, and see if it would be possible to get a crash test result, or whatnot.

anyway, feel free to leave comments on what you think, or who the administrator is. but if your just gonna be retarded, don't bother posting.

again, just wanted to throw out some info,

later,

harrison

oh here is some other cool info, if you type in 4578 instead of 5863, you'll get a few other documents, that can be looked at, which hold lots of info when the RI first submitted the pettion. things which include "chaning blinker lights, door bars, etc. however it doesn't specifically say these are the changes for the FD since its talking about 87-95's.

if someone is really interested in getting a JDM rx7 into the US, you might want to start by calling
JK Motors of Kingsville, Maryland
RI # 90-006

they are the guys who first pettitioned it, and might have some more info available, or be able to pettion for a RHD version.

here we go....

Interesting info Harisson. Another member on the board here has been inquiring about it for a while. I think he now lives in the UK because of the military and once his time is up he wants to bring an FD back. I think his screen name on here is TEDDER1
