Imported FD "legal" Post up if you got one

I've done some research and this is about the best I could come up with for a "federally legal" way. Also what would the state legeal way be, and how does it differ. I seriously doubt the united states gov. is going to **** with a statelegal car when they have infinite better ways to be spending there resources.

THE KIT CAR MEHTOD

[qoute]

1) It will not be a mazda, it will be a reconstructed body.

2) DOT, EPA has NO CONTROL over an "assemblage of car parts"

3) You need to call Kaizo Industries (The only 50 state legal way to bring in ANY grey market car), buy a rolling 1992 FD Shell. They will sell you only the shell, without any engine, motor, or headlights, or wheels. An "assemblage" of car parts.

4) Kaizo is a registered manufacturer, so the car comes with an MSO (manufacturers' statement of origin). The car is no longer a mazda, nissan, or w/e else the car was. The car is a KAIZO now. It will be titled as a 2007/2008/2009 + Kaizo. The car goes through some restructuring to meet certain DOT Compliance, so it is not the same thing as what mazda sold to the public.

5) Car gets inspected and assigned a VIN. (You can get a california license plate too).

6) A stock 13B-REW is a federally conforming engine, so you can legally put it in your body. You can put w/e engine you want in it, LS1, 2jz-gte, name it. The RB26DETT is a federally conforming engine as well too. So this covers the Skyline GT-Rs.

7) Register your car in any state, when you are done assembling your car, and enjoy the fruits to come: Since the car is a legal kit car that is no longer what it used to be, apply for a 1 out of 500 california smog exemption.

8) This is the ONLY 100 PERCENT LEGAL way to drive a Grey Market car in the United States. Any car with a Nissanie Motorsports (some of the original experimental Kaizo cars from a few years back, mainly GT-Rs), or Kaizo Industries sticker in the door jambs, and firewall is a 100 percent legal car.

looks like http://www.kaizoindustries.com no longer works.

anyway, i've seen a few RHD fd's, r32's, r33's here in the states. mostly in fl, where they were all registered, titled, etc.

i was told the cars are first titled in maine, then re-titled in florida.

The Kiazo kit car legalization mechanism was always deeply bogus. Kit cars are explicitly not supposed to be based on a mass produced car.

The scary thing in this letter though is the fact that the feds are following up on all of these cars.

How hard do you think it would be for them to ask all DMVs in the country for cars with JDM VINs and send similar letters to the owners of those cars?

The biggest risk buying an illegally imported RHD FD was always that the car would be repossessed and crushed some day. The chance of this happening, however, was always remote. Now I would think that it is only a matter of time.

it's not like they didn't make FDs in the states.

Just purchase one here and RHD swap it. I don't get the desire to import cars that were made in the USDM. ... and in decent quantity.

It isn't about RHD, I prefer to drive a LHD, but when you can purchase a 99-02 for the price of 93-5s, it sparked my intrest. Its not feasable, and could only be a track car.

Also after doing some more looking into, the only reason they can get nobles is because the engine is a diffrent make than the car. So if you wanted to do the kitcar thing you would have to use a none mazda engine for it to be legit. Im sure your all awar of the ls1 or 2jzgte and other swaps out there and it would be 100times easyer to just buy a usdmone even if your going that route. Period.

So, your post wasn't about getting an RHD but more about the cost of an FD?? I think FD's these days are pretty reasonable.. Nicely done LS1 for 18K and running FD's for 8-9K.. That's cheapest I've seen in years!

I don't agree with 99-02 FDs are like price of 93-95.. Do you even own an FD?? Also, if money is an issue, than I don't recommend owning an FD.

But nobles are a kit car. Mazdas are not. If you want a 99-02 so bad bring one over in a box and part it in to a 93-95.

The rule exists to prevent things just like kaizo.

the state legal way is easy, you just bring the title to the DMV and register it. the FED's still will come after you though, they do not have better things to do.

According to the NTHSA, the 92 - 95 was fully legal to import to the USA.

The key word (which is in the title) is 'eligible'. To federalize, you would have to jump through many hoops with a registered importer, which - as has been covered 3,443,434 times on this board - is a multi-year, $100k+ process with no guarantee of success.

No sensible person will even do this because JDM FDs in that year range are essentially identical to USDM FDs.

This seems to be the only legit way to bring one in. As a Canadian gaining US citizenship, you are allowed to register your personal vehicle, though I'm not familar with the literature which involves the sale of said car.

-- Just did some extra reading ---

I think the fact that the non-US FD isn't up to safety standards is going to be the one of the short list of reasons why it won't ever be eligible for street use here.

Now that wwe have 1001 active threads on this subject. Read the full document Unless RHD is specified in the car listing only LHD is permitted. RX-7's do not have the RHD designation, because LHD's were/are available. Who wants to import a european 95 car when wwe have more to chose from in the orginally US allocation.
