I'm a newbie to this Rotary stuff

Hey all,
I just bought a 94 RX7 down in the Dallas area (I'm from Nebraska) but won't be getting it til the end of the month. I was wondering if there are any of those "free mods" I could do to the car when it comes. All it has is a bigger downpipe. I'm 17 and this is my 4th car and my parents (specifically my Mom) said I can't do anything to the engine while I'm living here. Mainly because my brother's blown the engine 4 times in his 97 Camaro SS and he's only put around 12,000 miles on the thing. SO my Mom now has it set in her head that if you touch the engine that it will blow. Luckily this car has a 3 year 36,000 miles warranty . Which brings be to my other question. Who makes a good high performance crate motor? Thanks for any help.

Nick

How does ur brother blow an cameros engine 4 times? Well what does that 94 have on it right now? Theres not really anything you can do right now since ur under warrenty. I'd just wait till ur warrentys up before you start adding stuff. Theres no real cheap way to add power to these cars.

Well, he does everything right when it comes to breaaking it in. One time he accidently put the jack under the oil pan and spun a bearing. Another time was with the cam. And the last time it had a loose rocker arm. The other one I can't remember, unless it blew up 3 times and he's had 4 motors. Thats probably it. Right now the car has a bigger downpipe. I don't plan on doing anything to the engine because of the warranty. I don't need anything right now. I just want to know what the most pupuilar mods are. I've had a 69 Bug, a 95 Camaro V6, and a 97 Prelude. So this is a big step up. So I can live with it .

Your mother is right, the engine will blow if not properly modified or maintained. First of all, the car is plenty fast as is. And secondly, you shouldn't touch the car until you know exactly what you're doing, preferably with the help of a rotary expert. A new engine will cost you in the neighborhood of $4,000, and it's easy to blow one if you do the wrong thing. I recommend you study up on the FD rotary for at least two months before you consider modifying anything. Search topics on the forum and check out this site and others:

I'm surprised that you got a waranty on a car that old (much less a twin turbo RX7 that old). who is the warranty company? I would consider getting one myself.

Crate motor: There's not really such an animal for the 7. As far as rotaries go, you've got the 13B (2 rotor) and 20B (3 rotor)... the 20B is, imo, more trouble than it's worth. The 13B is made by Mazda (as is the 20B) - there really isn't anyone else making a comperable engine from scratch that would be any better. So you're pretty much stuck with the 13B.

You can always slap an LT1 in there (there are kits available). Everyone seems to enjoy hearing about a V8 going into an RX7. hehehe

I don't know what the warranty company is. The dealership is LA Motor Cars in Dallas. They're website is www.lamotorcars.com. Great place to deal with. They got quite a few RX7's. I'm looking forward to driving it. I just got back from driving my friend's 500hp 1990 300ZXTT. So I know what to expect.

No, I just save my money. I've never been in a wreck before either. I've got a clean record also (still haven't got caught). I'm kind of sick of all the rice that drive's around here. It's simply pathetic in a small town. I mean, we got Neon "Viper Editions" that think they got VTEC's in there car because there is a VTEC sticker on their engine! Kid's out here worship the VTEC engine. I was driving along and a kid comes along and asks "What you got in there?" And I said "Just a 2.2 VTEC". And he's like "No way! You got a VTEC!" They probably think my RX7 is a Ford Probe. There was a kid who thought that my friends 300ZX was a Mazda?!?! And then there's this "smart" kid who asked my friend where the bottles were to store the liquid for the turbo's!?!?! If it wasn't for that dumb movie....

I don't think anybody could possibly gauge the amount of stupidity that movie has caused.

god help us, kids just dont know these days. so you got your car from LA motorcars. what color was it, and what model? i dont know what to think about them anymore. i had a friend test drive a car that they were selling and it was an fd, but totally broke down on the test drive. and before LA was just telling her how good of a car it was and how it runs perfectly and yadda yadda. granted shes a girl, and maybe they though they could screw here over, but turns out the car was a freakin lemon.

your mom should not really worry about you blowing the engine like you brother, there aren't any of those parts in a rotary, just dont over boost it and you should be fine.

as far as mods go, i suggest you do all the relibility mods, they should cost ya between 2-5k which are on the http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/stages.html site and the http://www.rx7turboturbo.com/robrobinette/ site.

have fun modding your car

Yeah, I bought my car from LA Motorcars. Its still there though. Its inside. Its silver with red leather, Touring Edition, auto (I know, I know, I'm a wussie), 87k miles, Pretty much mint on the outside. The leather has some wear. But it looks really nice. I had someone my brother know's down there test drive it and look it over. And he said it ran great and looked awesome. Thats to bad about your friend though. Another reason I bought this car was the warranty.
