Im I getting ripped off

A guy is charging me 10K or more to purchase and install an engine and transmission in my 93 Rx7. I bought it with nothing but looking on line I can get a Transmission for $300. I just dont know about everything else needed and the prices. Anyone who has done this personally, please let me know if this is a good deal or overpriced?

Depends.

I spent 7k on having an engine swapped out. Yeah I had all tho hoses replaces, fuel dampeners, plugs, wires, coils, etc etc etc replaced too (no tranny though) but it is worth it to have it done right. If you have a very old roller it wouldn't surprise me that it would cost that to get it right (that is, without half-assing anything). I noticed you are from Florida, try Pettit Racing. They are a great shop and will get your car so that it is right.

I would ask for a print out of the estimate so you have a breakdown of everything you are getting for 10k. Physically examine the motor and transmission you are getting and make sure to compression test the engine before it goes in. If it is a reman remove the oil pan to check for oil-pickup cloggage as well.

Too many variable to judge. $5k is probably an absolute minimum. However, for $10k the shop had better be a well-known reputable rotary specialist.

Unless they're sourcing brand new everything from Mazda, you're getting pwned.

waltaz,

You need to get a break down of the costs. I can easily see $5000 just in parts depending on where they are coming from:

Reman engine without core $3200
Reman transmission without core (probably at least this much if not more) $1500
New wiring harness $800

And yet, you still have no components for the rest of the engine and no labor fees yet (I'm assuming you have no drive line by your initial message). The amount it's going to cost will depend on you. Do you want all new parts or all used parts? How much 'shopping' do you want to do?

Agreed as usual

I offer the best priced rebuilt short blocks and long blocks on the market last I checked and you are usually looking around $4k minimum for a longblock with harness, clutch, and trans. This guy said he had nothing with the car, if it needed exhaust, radiator, intercooler, driveshaft, power plant frame, shifter, slave cylinder, power steering, A/C stuff then I dont find $10k to be all that insane. If you are looking at $6-7k in parts then that is $3-4lin labor to take a stripped shell back to a good running car, that really isnt that insane. Probably more than I would charge but not by a whole lot.

Too many variables to say the guy is getting ripped until he gives everyone a detailed explanation of the situation.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice, I found from all the replies that 10K isn't too much. The car has absolutely nothing in it at the moment so yes, everything is coming in new. Nothing was rebuilt from the vehicle and all wiring/parts/labor is put into consideration. Thanks for the help and advice, it's appreciated.
