Cats are a complete waste of time on this car imo. I had a SMB metallic cat for a couple of years and sold it, you only get a few years out of them with all the unburned fuel and sky high exhaust temps a rotary belts out, plus the cat robs you of 1-2 psi.
Put on a midpipe and let it rip. If you have to SMOG the car, just bait and switch, it's all a game.

Wow. That sucks.
FWIW, I've had good luck with both of my metal cats. I melted 2 used stock cats on my previous FD in 3 years of ownership.
The first was a Random Tech universal 3" in/out metal cat that I had welded into an ebay mid pipe. I ran it for 3 years about 10k miles and the core looked perfect when I sold that setup.
The second is an SMB cat + muffler mid pipe combo. Its been on 3 years and about another 10k miles. I haven't personally looked at it since the install but my mechanic said it looked fine when he did my motor recently.
I had a decent amount of track time on both setups.

Beware! The melted part of my core was at the center of the core and it looked fine from the front an back! The third pic was all I took out from the front of the core that remained in the pipe and it looked perfect!
