Considering what other (used) cars are available today for under $20k, I think you should do some shopping around first. The issue with the 3rd Gen RX7, is that the seating area is just not that big. This limits the seat choices you have which is especially an issue for those with larger waist sizes. The car is not for everyone so I would do a little test driving around just to make sure this is something you even want to attempt to do.

Even if your belly isn't fat, if you have large legs (long or thick) you might have trouble fitting them under the steering wheel. Definitely try before you buy, I haven't measured or done a good back-to-back comparison but I'd swear Miatas have more interior space than these cars. Fits like a glove if you're 5'8" and under 150lbs though.

I'm not too big (5'9 and 160lbs) and i find that there's more room in the car than most think. I have a JDM FD, and I've driven with every one of the seats filled (with guys, so +1 on the sausage feast i suppose.): And two of the guys were bigger and taller than me. Of course, anything more than 20 minutes like that and I'm sure there'd be a lot of complaining. The back seats are pretty much useless, there is zero headroom or legroom. The passenger seat has enough legroom, but is not wide enough to accommodate some bigger people. The only "normal" sized seat is the driver's seat. Right now, the seat still has room to move back, and the steering wheel doesn't touch my legs, but it does come pretty close. I don't think there's a way around this, because if you move the seat back too far, your hand wont be able to reach the wheel, and i find that if i moved the seat back, my left foot wouldn't be able to depress the clutch all the way in...

Well ill input. Im 6'5" 200lbs and i can fit in an FD fairly well. My brother is 6'3" 230 and can also fit in well. Get a smaller steering wheel, and some seat lowering brackets and your good to go. Its not THAT bad.
