Ignitor test

I was wondering if it was ok to test the outputs of the ignitor with a test light, to see if it flashes while cranking the engine. Has anyone tried this before? I suppose it would be safer to use an analog voltmeter and look at the pulses, but I only have a digital one. What do you guys think?
