Ignition Coil Specification Help
I have a friend who is running some Mallory Coils (E-Promaster) that he bought because it had the highest voltage @51,000V peak.
Unfortunately not being very knowledgeable on the matter he was sold on peak voltage. However, his car is knocks ridiculously irregardless of retard and it runs pig rich all of the time!
This got me thinking what if the ignition coil he chose has a spark that isn't strong enough to give a good burn and doesn't have a long enough spark duration to ensure a complete burn.
His Specs:
Mallory Promaster e Series
Primary Resistance 0.5 ohms Secondary Resistance8.9K ohms
Maximum Voltage 51,000 volts
Turns Ratio 99:1
Peak Current260 mA
Spark Duration 250 uS
Compared to Howard C's Coils
HVC-2 Coil, 6 Series Ignitions
Part No. 8253
Primary resistance: 0.16 OHMs
Secondary resistance: 630 OHMs
Inductance: 3.5 mH
Maximum voltage: 44,000 Volts
Turns ratio: 100:1
Peak current: 450 mA
Spark duration: 450 uS
Weight:3.75 lbs
Notice that the MSD's have much less resistance, use much more current and have almost double the park duration.
Now, although I recommended to go back to the stock coils and just continue to run his HKS Twin Power he refuses at all costs. So I have recommended to him to get two MSD's and keep the Mallory's for clean-up duty on the trailing. But still he doubts my diagnostic and has asked me to find, any specs on the OEM coils so my question to you forum members is Does anyone know the Peak Current and/or Spark Duration of the OEM coils?
