I know hard core FD fans will, but I wonder how many will go up for sale if it happens....the way this car sucks the gas (and contaminates the oil at the same time) is truly astonishing, it's one of the things I dislike most about these cars, from a day-to-day standpoint

they only get poor fuel mileage in the city. a properly tuned and running rotary should be able to get 23-28mpg while still having the capability of supercar horsepower levels when in boost(not stock obviously).

i foresee more people driving them only on the weekend versus daily but $5 per gallon isn't anything we haven't already been close to. i remember a few years back before the war i was paying over $4 per gallon for a week or two, it hurt but i still needed to drive to work i just took less leisurely drives.

The gas mileage is bad by today's standards, but 18 years ago 255horsepower was a lot and the FD was comparable to many other vehicles with engines in that power range. On properly running engines it's not that the gas mileage is awful, it's that our expectations are understandably higher in this world of 300 horsepower, 30mpg highway V6 Mustangs.

Few people daily drive an FD for much of the year. It's an occasional/weekend car now and it will continue to be. I think most people will drive their FD a little less but mostly just eat the cost.

 

Good luck selling the car when gas hit $5... And to answer your question the only 2 reasons I would sell my car is if I was about to lose my house or god forbid a family member was sick and needed money I did t have for dr. Bills.

 

FD will remain.... I would contemplate selling the CTS-V however. That is becoming an expensive DD in its own right.

of course i would keep my FD, i dont drive it that much anyways anymore. school has consumed me lol, but i think a lot of people would start switching to other fuels such as E85 or would just not care. as said before many times its a sports car not an eco car so who cares. most peoples cars are not even smog legal according to today's standards. i remember filling up for $4.55 a gallon back in 2008 didnt stop me then wont stop me now.

 

The Fd is too much of a collectors car to let go over some BS gas prices! I don't car what your driving, $5.00 per gallon is gonna hurt the wallet no matter what your driving.

Rotaries suck the gas under throttle worse than a two stroke, they are extremely inefficient/"dirty" engines, in terms of unburned fuel blow-by

 

Gas prices/environmental laws/other cars etc will never force me to sell my FD.

*Just as a side note- I'm curious why have you been trying to come up with a million reasons/scenarios to persuade people(or your self) that the FD is inferior? I can see that you have owned your FD for a good amount of time as indicated in your sig and its obvious that the "luster" of the car has worn off. Thats would leave the only option of selling your car and moving onto something more to your liking, I just don't get why you need to try and tarnish the FD's reputation as a world class sports car to re-assure yourself of making that decision.

good point, i rememeber all the gas guzzler trucks and SUVs going up for sale a few years ago when gas prices first rose. no one was buying them or they were taking huge losses in the sale just to off them.

if you think our cars are bad, i opted to keep the 7 over my old 383 stroked '69 elcamino because i just couldn't foresee driving it that much when it was getting around 9mpg on the highway.. i still see the muscle car guys holding onto their old prestigious cars so i doubt people will flood out and sell their FDs, and those guys get half the mileage. now think about how many people are switching to e85: it costs nearly twice as much in fuel to run e85 because they are ripping people off who are trying to drive green(e-85 costs more than pump fuels in almost every place i have seen it for sale. i remember when methanol cost less than a buck a gallon, ethanol takes basically the same process and is more readily available for production than methanol is). strangely enough methanol and ethanol jumped up in price when the cost of pump fuel rose, it is related to the shipment costs from diesel but it shouldn't have spiked as much as it did(gas prices rose maybe 50% where alternative fuels tripled or quadrupled in price).

 

It's actually not THAT bad... perceptions are made worse by everyone running overbuilt fuel systems (huge primaries, etc.) and running "safe" 10:1 AFR's. I remember the big SUV ell-off when gas hit $4 or whatever, then it came back and everybody's sphyncters became unbunched. Jeeze, everybody is so reactionary.

It's a turbocharged high performance car. Don't drive it to work or on family vacations. Honestly, if you've ever owned and maintained one of these cars, you know that gas prices are the least of your troubles.

That's €0,99 for 1 litre.

We actually pay €1,60 for 1 litre over here. Which works out to $8 per gallon.
