VA Ideas for better compartment cooling w/o AC

Currently I have a 93 R1, so no sunroof and thanks to the previous owner no AC. On those nice warm days it sure does get nice and toasty in the drivers compartment. Even with the windows down you don’t get much in the way of airflow, I blame that on the awesome aerodynamics.

I was looking to see if anyone has the same issues, I have done a bunch of searching but havent found much.

The fan really doesnt pump out much in the way of airflow.

Only option would be to restore the AC. You should be able to find the parts in the 3rd gen parts section. Lots of people with track cars have removed the AC.

Well I know that would be the best solution but not exactly the most cost effective one. I am currently dropping a pretty penny on a new motor and single turbo setup so funds are a little tight.

i had same heat issues with my fc, with a sunroof!... Im trying to insulate firewall and undercarriage to improve with internal car temps.... The exaust on rotaries are much hotter than piston exhausts, so maybe a nice exhaust wrap will help some.
Other then that i cant see much else helping... Maybe kick out your windshield? Haha

The only thing to really help out as-is is a good window tint job and a sunshade for the front window when parked. That will keep the sunlight down and get the interior cooler.

That said, you can't beat having good ol' AC in the car. It's really a shame that so many people rip out the AC systems as it works SO well. It will freeze you out of the car it's so cold.

For around $200-$300 or so you could probably get a working system together. Get all the lines and parts, get new O-rings, and get it charged with refrigerant. Not that big of a cost all things considered, especially if you're willing to get your hands dirty.

Ice vests and vests that you put in the freezer work really well also. The ice vest or getting a used ac compressor and evap with lines might be your best option.

I have the same problem, i do have a sun roof and its no help. you'll just have the sun beating on you and will be forced to wear sunglasses. agreed installing an A/C is the best option $$$ wise. If your just against it like i am i again agree to try and insulate the car. i have wrapped the exhaust and plan to insulate the firewall and floor with dynomat.

Well I am looking into what I am going to need to get the AC back up and running. But I am alos going to buy some of the DEI foil heat wrap and do the trans tunnel and the firewall. I am also going to wrap the downpipe and front section of the exhaust.

So we will see how it plays out. I also played around with the idea of fabbing some fiberglass air duct that would fit in the window channels and would be removable to force the air into the compartment.

With a rebuild and single in the works, it's a perfect time to install the A/C again. As Dale mentioned, there really is not a substitute. Everything else would seem hacked. Be patient with the time and money, it will get there.

air duct between outside mirror and foor frame

I had a 944 Turbo track/street car a long time ago that had what was left of the AC removed after an engine fire before I bought it. I had picked up a bunch of rigid plastic air ducts at the junkyard for experimenting with. A buddy that was in the car with me a day later and grabbed one and jammed it between the outside mirror and the door frame, it had just the right curves in it that the outside part was facing directly forward and the outlet was blowing air at me. Worked great and was easy to put in place or take out when done with a drive. If you can find something that happens to fit an FD there may be market for them Could look funky, but that car already had extra brake and intercooler ducting so it fit in with the look of the car.

Restore the A/C, there are many people selling them taken off their car in working order. This would be the best choice and next is to heat wrap your down/midpipe. Since you are doing a rebuild and motor is out might as well do all of this while you are at it.

Best thing is restore a/c obviously.

Btw i tell you my experience.

I have an old BMW 320i E36 swapped with an E46 M3 engine.

The Heat is helllike.

I remove alla the dash and made a 10/15 cm fiberglass shield that divide :engine room" from living area.

This shield cover ALL behind the dash.

In the engine bay i cover all the car zone near engine with gold/silver tape.

I do the same under the car to reflex Heat from exaust.

In my case i can't restore acro becouse i use that car to race and HP drain from old AC on old BMW is terrible and cause i have no money for a trail i drive car from home to Circuit and during summer I don't want to die.

Btw at the end of races i'm one of the healtier pilot XD. The I can sat that this Hans worked for me

Sorry for my bad english hope this can help.

I remember one of my buddies use to carry around a 90º rubber plumbing connector (3" or so) that he would wedge between is A pillar & mirror. Sounds ghetto... but he swore by it

Actually not too bad of an idea, I think there is room for improvement on that idea. But I will give it some thought.

I think that regardless I am going to pursue the AC due to overall best results and I would be screwed on those hot rainy days.
