A quick search will list all the differences between the models. Mostly the differences come down to options, as they are all the same engine. R1/R2 models having some suspension differences and a second oil cooler not available to any other model.

I suggest doing a lot of researching before getting into one. They are great cars, but they have high upkeep. Prices for a good 3rd gen rx7 will run anywhere between 12k and 20k, depending on miles, condition, new engine?, new turbos, mods. you can probably buy a decent rx7 with no engine or a blown engine for around 6k to 10k and drop a fresh engine in for a few grand. ive owned my car for almost 4 months and have put like $1500 into mods and almost $2000 into repairs. Also when you buy an rx7 you have to think to yourself, do you want a bone stock one or do you plan to mod **** out of it (there really isn't much of a middle ground, because moding your car is an addiction) whatever route you choose for your possible rx7, be prepared to jump into arguably the best sports car to come out of japan!!

Also, when looking into buying a 7, have a well known shop that works on rotary engines check the car out and definately have them do a compression test. The last thing you want to do is buy a car and blow the engine the next month!

Get a touring, IMO.

You can always add the parts that an R1/R2 has like strut bar, suspensions parts, and an oil cooler kit. You'll want to anyways as there are aftermarket replacements for these that are better anyways.

It's nice to have the sunroof, leather seats, and some other smaller amenities.

And if you want the gay spoiler of an R1 you can buy one I have [Sorry- it's not really gay but I'm anti spoiler so I had to make a crack on it - makes FDs look like 3000GTs, god forbid]
