The first thing you should do is take it to a local mechanic who knows rotary engines and have it compression tested. Thats really the only way to ensure the motor is in good shape. If it doesn't already have a boost gauge, you should look into getting one before you buy it, to ensure that the turbos are working correctly.

If you can't find a good local rotary mechanic, Mazda can do simple things like compression tests. But thats really the most important issue. Check your local Forum, theres probably a list of mechanics in and around Orange County.

If all that checks out ok, $4200 seems like a good deal, depending on how much damage was done in the curbing incident.

Be sure to read the "Newbies" thread at the top of the page. Tons of good info there about what to look for in an RX-7.

Sure if you want a project car. I would estimate at least $7-8k (depending on the amount of damage from the crash) if everything else is still original (engine and turbo rebuild, new radiator, dp, springs, struts, etc) to do it right.

Also, make sure you actually want an automatic. Personally, I would never buy a sports car in an automatic. I did once and regretted it. However, some people don't mind it. So just make sure it's what you really want.

Even if the compression is good, 100k on the original engine means that chances are it will let go soon and that will add a minimum of $2000 in repair costs.

still.. even it has shitty compression... a 93 auto or not.. for 4200 is an good deal.. imo. Though true, this will be sort of a project car - ie plan on spending time and $$ into it.

I bought a MB/tan automatic project car for $5k 3 months ago with 98k miles on it and a functioning engine (dubious but functioning). Clean title as well. Touring model with no major body damage except one fist sized ding in a qtr panel.

My mechanic said I got an "OKAY" deal. I think I got a great deal and $4200 sounds sweet, regardless of compression. Apparently he thought that was about right and bought a similar red one (non touring) but w/ 5speed trans for about $5k this past month and says its not that uncommon.

You pay a premium for the cars these people have on this forum and ebay because there cars are clean, probably well taken care of, and modded. IMO, it's better to start with a project car and just replace everything since you may have to anyway....
