I would start from Jonathan Ott's steps starting at #3...that should do it for you. Start there, it isn't that hard and is easier to read and start to do then to re-describe the process. I can get the cluster out in about 15 mins now that I know how to do it.
I also drop the steering column a little (two bolts under column) that gives a little extra clearance.
Just start the process, if you get stuck just repost where you are in the steps.

7racer....thanks for the advice bro...im not sure if i wanna do it myself, or pay someone to do it...what would you recommend...after i get it apart, is the rest easy? will i have to remove my needles?? also, i dont remember seeing 2 screws on the botoom of the cluster....maybe i just wasnt looking hard enough...
you can easily get to the cluster in 15 mins....its easy. If you follow your steering column (after you remove the lower plastics in following the steps) you will see the two bolts...you are a couple steps away from this.
As you start to do it you will see what everyone keeps talking about. You just have to suck it up and just do it! There isn't anything you can damage, just removing bolts and screws...
Now about the overlays...you might want to do a search first before you get involved in the replacement. You can really FUBAR the needle placement. So my advice...do a SEARCH!

with these guages it said that i dont have to take off the needles...so i dunno if i need to or not...they are the reverse guages...background is white, at night its black with bright blue #s. where do you live?
I just finished putting my gauge cluster back on yesterday. The only part I was frustrated with was getting it off in the first place. I didnt drop the steering column. The reason I was frustrated was because I couldnt get that bonnet to come lose behind the gauage cluster. Its screwed to the gauge cluster from the inside so once you have all vent pieces off and the steering column cover off you have to grip the top of the guage cluster and pull it straight back towards you. It will make a popping sound because the bonnet is held in by clips at the back where the bonnet meets up near the windshield. If you pull it at an angle the clips will break from the plastic, and they could also break anyway just because the plastic is old and cheap. One of mine did, but some industrial strength adhesive fixed that. It was just a tense moment when pulling it hard back towards me since i thought it was gonna break
so am i going to have to take just the cluster off, or half of my dash?? the screws i had loose tonight made like my whole left dash move...the cluster, then the whole hump part in front of the steering wheel
did you read and understand the descriptions that were given? it's pretty clear that you are just needing to remove the pod.
I have not idea what screws you have already removed. i would put them all back on and restart from square one.
the 'fsm" is the Factory Service Manual. also known as the workshop manual. it is available online and contains all the info you will need to take apart and reassemble your FD.
but you have to read it first.

He isn't being a dick; you're just a helpless little street urchin who bought too much car.
[Personally, I know you don't have a car. You're either too young to drive or you drive sitting in your clergyman's lap. Go back to the bicycle forum you came from.]

just be carefull when you install them, because if you do it wrong your gauges wont work right...not doubting your skills and all since you said that you are an electrician...just be carefull.
