I hear its bad to change the transmission Fluids

I was reading up on changing the transmission fluids in the automatics. And I read primarily that changing the fluids in your transmission is bad. And that the fluid should never be changed. I was reading that the gunk in the old transmission fluids and sludge is actually what keeps your car from breaking down, and keeps the gaskets together. I read stories of guys who never had a problem with there transmission before changing the fluids, and after changing it the transmision later went, or they lost a gear or two. I can't believe that worth a ****. How can having dirty transmission fluids and thick metal shaving sludge in your fluid be good? And then cleaning it out with brand new fluids be negative. I know the new transmission fluids will have detergents and clean the junk out, which I would presume to be a positive thing.

So I decided to drain the transmission pan in my FD and there were some metal shaving in the pan. There were several approximately 1/4 inch long and maybe 1cm wide. I was told it was normal, but should I worry? What was particularly interesting is that when I dip the stick in the fluid it looks normal reddish color. When I dropped the pan today it was black mud sludge. Anyhow I haven't put the pan back on, I'm waiting to get the filter tommorrow.

I think it's silly to avoid changing fluids in auto trannies unless you're talking about an old car that just needs to 'make it another 10k'. This is an FD - it deserves fresh fluid.

You could always add some Lucas SlipFix (whatever the name is) if putting in new fluids screws it up.

On the bright side, auto trannies are stupidly cheap and available.

I think that theory only applies to automatic transmissions that have been neglected.

Probes have the same shitty transmissions that the Mazda 6cyl 626s had. Total garbage.

I hear people say this all the time and it's ridiculous. Yes, if your trans is so badly neglected that the shitty fluid is just keeping things running, it's time is almost up anyway. However, I know one thing for certain if you don't change the fluid it will definitly go out on you. Sure, in rare instances changing the fluid may cause a tranny to fail, but not changing the fluid most definitly will make a tranny fail.

aaaaarrrrrrrgggghhhhh, I have to gripe about this thread. This really bugs me, it's like every other stupid automotive myth. Like the people who say you don't need to change your oil every 3k because most owners manuals say 5k-8k, hell why not just keep adding oil and never change it? This ranks in stupidity right up there with "You shouldn't wear steel toe boots because if the steel toe gets crushed it could cut off a your toes" or "Diesel won't catch fire like gas will around an open flame"

Someone should close this thread so no one gets the stupid idea that they shouldn't change their transmission fluid.
