The TCA is a logical choice too... this sounds like it would be not transitioning to twin mode... mine had the opposite problem of not switching BACK from twin mode, so one run and the it sounded all farty... but not like an owl.

That owl sound is likely compressor surge... so something is pushing your boose back through the turbo, or restricting it from leaving... in otherwords, something ain't opening up where it should. That leads me to think it's the y-pipe, because if it was the TCA, it would just stop making boost in the first place.
I was stuck on the Y pipe for 3 hours the first day and that didn't kill that damn bird.

Steve wins this one. It was the TCA. I can't believe I didn't just replace it when he posted but I tested it using my lungs and it seemed ok. Well I guess it wasn't a total waste of time I have Genes old polished manifold some new coils, new solenoids (good condition) and 1 less solenoid to worry about

Yes in my case it was the TCA and now my baby is BACK! I'll be able to polish off those Hondas when I heading into work mocha in hand and all

Symptom:
boost works when RPMs are below 2500 to 3k in any gear but once you let off and get back into the gas at 3k and above the boost is flat and if you take it to 6k or higher you'll hear the owl.

It began with slowly. Maybe I'd get 3 or 4 pulls with good boost but in the end it was like clock work. Above 3k low boost and the dreaded hoot owl would sound off, below 3k good boost and transition until I let off.

Yeah, check all the hoses/pipes/connections from the turbo Y-pipe to the cross-over pipe and into the bottom of the IC. Look for loose connections, cracks, splits, etc. Probably should check it from the top of the IC to the elbow too...

The most common one I've seen is the connection coming loose from the Y-pipe. It's held on with only a hose clamp. (Just behind the air pump, look straight down.)

i'll take a look at that thanks. my next question is.....if the turbo control actuator is faulty. will that prevent my fisrt turbo(boosting at low rpms) spooling?

Not sure, but it might give you only half your normal primary boost if it stuck open.

I had a similar problem years ago and it was something really similar and once I had solved it my car went like a cut cat, not a little cut but one where the cat was held down, cut deep, poked with a stick then let go with dogs chasing it!!!!!

Here was the problem:
I assembled the engines accessories using the Mazda Manual hooking up all the pipes etc in the correct places following the manual step by step. After getting the car going it was boosting and fast but made this funny noise like you were saying. After many failed attemps at fixing it I put my car up next to a mates and pulled manifolds off both cars to check vacuum hoses etc and we found there was an error in the diagram. It clearly shows a three way turbo control solanoid and says connect it up a certain way but you need to have it in the reverse order. Have a look at the diagram that I have supplied, remember check your is in the reverse position to this picture.
I really hope this solves your problem. good luck and let us know

basically, whenever i let off in boost over 4500rpm, an owl goes HOOOO, and if i immediately punch it again, the boost still only goes back up to 3psi until i go back under 4500rpms and boost...

am i on drugs? or has anyone else heard of this...
Had the same problem. Turns out a turbo was not seated correctly in the turbo housing.

Good luck
