I do not want to sell my FD!

There were times when I was on the edge of putting my car for sale. I will not talk about reasons ..but... I'm glad that have not and I will for sure keep working on it. My Christmas bonus money went on parts and some tools...

Interesting thing is that lots if not everyone around me ask when I'm going to sell my FD... they asked questions like "It's almost done, are you gonna put it for sale?", "Do you think if you sell it you can get your money back", "Your car is getting old , you should sell it before it's too late" , "That car probably wont pass emission test, part it out and sell it in peaces" , "It's rotary sell it before engine fails"...... rarely something positive .. Well I wonder if you guys live in same environment... and how you deal with those type of comments...

I'm not discouraged yet and I will not stop until there is really nothing else to mod..

I'm also glad to see here on rx7club guys are still working on new rotary builds making some great custom stuff and lots of power... That is some great positive energy. I need to take some TIG welding classes for sure. .

I cant wait to work on my FD during the Christmas break...

It's ironic, every person I talked to who did sell their FD wished they didn't. I mean, they did have their reasons but I'd rather not have that regret.

This car gave me a lot back. Things that those people just can not see and understand. I do not care if it costs and take lot of my time, I enjoy it and that's it. At least I'm not one of those who pretend having fun by doing things that are just suppose to be cool, but might not be actually cool to them... I see that a lot.

Besides being my passion and personal satisfaction It helped me with other stuff in life too. I give you one example... On my first job interview out of the college things were not going that great, kind of boring interview... "OK you just graduated, you answered few of my questions but how do I know you are good fit for this engineering position" there just not too many things he can ask to see if I'm the person he is looking for... Somewhere at the end he asked if I have any hobbies... I was kind of hesitant to say that I actually work on cars... I said it anyways because I was under assumption that he wont hire me judging by his facial expressions. I swear to god as soon as I mentioned cars and what I do he completely changed, he became more interested and he kept asking more questions... When I mentioned I data log thru Aftermarket ECU that was it! Match .Position I was applying for had to do a lot with Fast data acquisition and troubleshooting on semiconductor equipement ... Getting hired in 2008 was not an easy task!

Another thing; Working on my car I learned a lot of fundamental stuff about cars in general that I can actually fix my other cars as well , save money to my parents , girlfriend, some friends and on my daily driven car ...Savings are huge..

Yes it costs but it gives you back one way or another!

I've always said half the fun of owning an FD is doing all the work yourself, if you're blessed with the space to do so.

I think a happy FD owner is a person who has a nice dependable daily car (in order to take your time doing work right on the FD), understands the extreme importance of a tune that is not bleeding edge, and has a well thought out plan on where they want to go with the car with regards to mods.

Unhappy owners in contrast don't have a backup car, rush repairs, push the tune to the limit, mod with abandon, take shortcuts and use cheap parts. That or they let themselves get raped by shops that charge them ridiculous amounts of money, and still do a crappy job.

If the car needs an engine rebuild every 5 or 6 years so what, it's still a lot cheaper than making payments. New cars are a lot more expensive than repairing something you already own.

The car is beautiful and timeless, still turns heads regardless of age. It is a blast to drive, and anyone lucky enough to ride with you in it either smiles the whole time or goes Casper the ghost white on you.

I have a suspicion that the type of people that whisper words into your ear about selling it are the kind of people that secretly hate you for owning such an incredible car.

Yes there are times the car will **** you off, but once you turn the key and hear that unmistakeable sound all is forgiven.

The only way I'd ever consider giving up the car was if I had to do so for the sake of my family and there was no other choice. In the end, it's just a car, but it's probably the only one that you'll ever own that gives you that feeling you get when you look at it.

You know the feeling I'm talking about

I view it as a classic now since it was designed over 20 years ago but it's a timeless classic like the Nissan S30.

FD's are big badass expensive toys. Like any other thing of this sort, there is always the balance of its necessity. I get the occasional hater, but the ones that give me a hard time have never ridden in it, and the ones who have shut right up .

Yeah I get some comments from family too... Don't drive that car it is going to explode (Sometimes there is smell of fuel, I leave oil premixing bottle in the trunk). "you are good mechanic and you know what you are doing, but still let other people do it" I guess it took awhile to get it started.. well you all know how long it takes... The other day I gave a ride to my father, second gear only, he got so scared that he broke off my passenger door handle. I was not even mad, it was that funny.. Next time I'll have camcorder ready.

One of my favorite things about my rx-7, is all the adventures and places I went because of it and would have no reason other wise to have gone there. Like the rides to KD rotary, JPR imports, the early rotorfests and all the meets. To me its these things that I enjoy and some people just don't understand

lol he will. Thats why he stays on the forum. Unless he's a lounge rat but i never see him there and the lounge sucks so idk.

I get an even mix of positive and negative feedback for the FD. When i drive i get the thumbs up or people recording my car from their phone or taking pics etc, waving etc. YOu dont know how many times i see a "tuner car" or even a regular car in my rearview and both driver and passenger are eyeing my car, then i see the passenger hold his phone out to record. lol its pretty funny.

But at car meets theres always a handful of people who complement my car only to follow it with, "you shoulda did the ls swap yo". Or, "yeah the fd is beautiful but man rotaries are weak and they break a lot, i could never own one". I used to always explain and be like hey its all in tuning and maintenance etc. But now i just nodd my head as if to say, "hey i can tolerate it, thats why i own it" type of deal. No matter how much you explain, people would only understand what they want to understand so no point in trying to educate them. So i gave up on that.

My dad and my bro dont like my FD at all lol. Ever since the beginning before i got it, i had my dad help me look since he's been in the car game forever. And he been telling me, dont get those cars, they are sophisicated and problematic. I was like i wanna buy what i wanna buy, its my money etc. So he helped me and i finally got it.

Fast foward 8 years later, my dad will always throw a little jab saying, "you should just sell that ****". He would just say it out of the blue whenever he sees the FD or whenever he sees me doing maintenance, or even cleaning it lol. I tell him this and it always shuts him up.

"sell it for me for 25k and its gone".

I know ill never get anywhere near 25k and i know he has tried to look up the market for it and he never gets back to me on the 25k so at least that shuts him up. lol

And lately i been getting some **** about the FD over on the gtoforum. I just ignore them. All i hear is "ls swap brahhhhhhh". lol

I know one thing for sure, only swap I would ever do is another rotary engine... 20B or 4 rotor.. just keep it Wankel... I understand benefits of V8 and I respect it but its just not for me and this car... I do not want to start that debate thou ... Everyone has their taste and opinion.

There is one guy in my area who has supra and around 600whp , he would always talk crap like put 2jz in FD, its more reliable and more power ... Anyways, I heard recently from other people that he got spanked by single turbo FD , but he never mentioned it to me. Also he had to rebuild his so reliable engine... Cost him fortune, all those rods, pistons... I think worth at least 3 13b rebuilds. I'm not comparing just saying if I have to rebuild it 3 times , its fine with me, that is just part of the fun.

I still stare at it like the day I got it. I still look at it everyday and think to myself how badass it is and how there is no other car I would rather have.

I've never even driven my car.. But I sold my reliable miata in order to have my dream car .. infact at the time I bought my miata for its similarity to the rx7 .

when i traded my miata for it , and since I've gotten lots of remarks about rotary's reliability and just expense of owning the car. people still cant wrap their heads around why I would do something like that sell my nice reliable car for well this money sink ..

Most people cant and will never understand .. every free moment has been dedicated to the car. I've learned a stupid ammount about the car and cars in general from changing the suspension to how fuel lines , turbos , tuning , reliability , the rotary engine and just admire the geometry and effort that went into designing and building this car ..

Like the nissan S30 which I thoguht was a beautiful car before I even knew what it even was .. I think the FD will be timeless in design beauty , and performance ...

Like you i've gotten very very very few encouraging remarks , and i'd be lying if I said those few remarks haven't driven me at times when my bank accoutn read in the negatives and I had a blown engine in the back yard haha

but I still have hope.. and I'm crossing my fingers that when the time comes and the car runs .. it will all be worth it .. but after all the trouble and effort and sweat ( not even my own ) that has gone into making that car.. I could never sell it reguardless of how it turns out or of the amount offered .. somethings Just cant be bought.

And I think , and I hope the FD will be classified as one of those things

^dude, iv read a few of your threads / posts and you have it pretty hard as far **** goes.
Serioulsy good on you and I hope you get it sorted soon. Your going to be pretty knowledgeable about these cars when your done.
Dont give up, the FD never fails to put a smile on my face when I drive it. Im low powered compared to many FDs but it can go far harder then im willing to!

Sold my CYM on 2005 and bought the same car back in 2011. I love just looking at it in the shop. Of course it is great to drive, I got phone calls from old friends after they saw the car in town again.

I also got people telling me to swap my 13B with a 1JZ or 2JZ!!!!!
I will never ever ever ever do that. And i will NOT sell my FD.

Since I live in the Middle East, Everything is 1JZ or 2JZ!!!! Skylines, Silvias, Pickups, Datsuns, 350Zs, RX8s, Bicycles, Trucks, Motorbikes, Vans...etc you name it...!!!!!! Because here people are So Dumb and Stupid, they just kill the car for drifting and other chaos stuff! so they see that 1JZ and 2JZ engines don't blow up easily and can cope with their stuff!!!

and RX7s weren't released here, I will keep it as long as i live, i've been dreaming to get one since when i was a kid, used to play a game called Option car tuning battle, a Japanese Car battle game, and there i fell in love with the RE Amemiya FD3S, and fell deeper in love with it when i found out it's a Rotary Engine with a Great Song of Power.

I never knew that i was going to own one, but thanks to God i have one now and i will never let it go, I also thank God that it wasn't released Exclusively in Japan like the Skyline, otherwise i wouldn't have owned one now since we can't have swapped RHD cars here anymore after 2006 in Oman

RX7 FD3S Forever...
